Is defensive coach a thing at pro soccer clubs? It seems like the revs should pay an ex pro defender to just come in and work on scenarios like stoppage time defending. Francis Okaroh on line 1...
Some possession. But listless passing and not much else in the 13th min. Come on, Revs. Wake up and play quality, professional soccer! At 21 mins. this is painful and boring… At 34 mins., PATHETIC. SIMPLY PATHETIC. AND SAME OLD, SAME OLD.
Good first half by the revs. A couple opportunities and near misses. Kept Colorado quiet. The main issue is in the final third. The revs lack a true forward that can make good runs and find spaces. Everything to Vrioni has been pretty direct. He's not been good on the road. Hope they bring on Wood by 60' to give them a different look up top.
It might be time to swap up Vrioni and Wood again. Give Wood the 60 minutes and see what he can do. I'll be watching to see how Peay handles his subs. The club has faded in the 2nd half recently, plus they're at altitude.
Vrioni hasn't scored yet on the road. I would have started Wood tonight. I'd like to see Chancalay up top.
Well dropping 3 points to the worst team in the league summarizes how this week has gone. Revs just need to dust themselves off and go again next week.
Kaye and Harkes have both been poor in the 2nd half ever since this skid started. Jones has been lousy tonight too.
Kaye and Harkes have been good the majority of the game. Just haven't had any outlets in the final third in the second half. Colorado's tactics have been really effective tonight. Revs are far too predictable in the final third. They work through Gil and no one makes any runs to free up space. Gil can't do it alone.
Nacho Gl should not be starting. He should be a sub only. We were doing fine without him when he was out injured. Start Buck in his place. Also, is Boateng never going to see the field again now that Arena is gone? The roster and subbing decisions have been poor post Arena.
In the Minnesota and Austin matches they couldn't get control of the ball in the 2nd half - which lead to tying goals. Granted they had plenty of help.
Those were both stoppage time goals though. I consider that a collective failure not just on MAK/Harkes. Tonight I thought they were mostly effective until Colorado switched things up in the second half and spread them apart. Kaye had good numbers - 89% passing accuracy, was 5/5 on long balls, 75 touches. 7/10 on duels. Harkes had 94% passing accuracy and 40 touches but turned the ball over more often, have so you could pick his game apart. Chancalay and Vrioni were mostly invisible so the issues tonight were in the final third. I agree the subs have been odd under both Williams and now Peay. Ben Sweat for Farrell when you're down 2 nil? That would have been a great spot for Boating to inject some pace and provide another threat to relieve the pressure on Gil. But if there's a mulligan it's this one given the week they've had. They laid an egg. Just need to have a short memory and move on from this one.
In 90 minute regulation game time, not counting the results of penalty shootouts, since Arena was suspended, the Revs have ONE win, four draws and two losses. It just hasn't been good enough on the field. The coaching staff drama combined with missing pieces for selection is killing this season. They have two games left before the four game gauntlet to end the season. The next two games are MUST WIN, SIX POINTS OR BUST. We're down to third in the conference table. They have to find some positive momentum, this week.
I'm honestly not sure how you recover from this. The decline started subtly, now it's gaining momentum. And the shortcomings are becoming obvious. It doesn't encourage me when I see Jones smiling and having an amicable conversation with opponents after such a poor effort - an effort that he made a sizeable contribution to. Didn't see too much fight out there till they went down 2-0. It is hard to win on the road in MLS but this effort tonight vs the worst team int he league was unacceptable. Hopefully Bou coming back changes the chemistry but once these things start to snowball, it's very hard to stop.
This season is done. The best we can hope for is that management is capable of hiring a first class replacement for Bruce and bringing in reinforcements during the offseason. It's so depressing considering how well we were doing before the Arena suspension.
I'm sure we'll see a different starting line-up moving forward though, and then we'll see if they can eek in the playoffs. Wood<-> Vironi, Boateng <-> Rivera, Bou<-> Gil .
This organization can't get out of its own way right now, so stuck in the spin cycle they are twisting themselves into knots Won the possession battle. #NERevs | @DraftKings pic.twitter.com/7WoGhx1PLP— New England Revolution (@NERevolution) September 17, 2023
They have played together and make the same runs. The revs really miss Bou - since he's been out the offense has been anemic.
This. An offense needs players who can do the unexpected, pop up and make dramatic plays. Outside of Gil, we're just very methodical and predictable. ---- Overall, I think we created some decent chances in the first half and failed to put any away or really create any sustained pressure which is where our goals often come from. Then in the 2nd half, seemed to totally lose our control of the game and the altitude took it's toll (not sure which caused which!). I was disappointed that we seemed to have no impactful tactical or personnel decisions to turn things back in our favor. I fear that is what happens when you have a coach with no MLS experience. It felt like they adjusted and we just didn't adapt at all. I think Chancalay is a talented player, but doesn't look like someone who will lead the offense - more like someone who can feast off of it. Colorado pressed us in our own half and pretty much forced us to play direct, with little to show for it. We're just going to see more and more of that if we can't demonstrate that we can handle it. Harkes seems to be hitting the wall a little bit - he was a burst of fresh air when he arrived, now we could use Polster and look at Harkes off the bench. Another ineffective outing by Buck. Not sure why Williams and now Peay haven't thought Boateng is worth a try at all. Rather poor game by Jones IMO. He got toasted on one goal and really provided very little in advancing the ball or at the attacking end. Overall, not a lot of a passion from the boys - I think the week's drama has left them kind of drained. And, I think the effect of having little training in the week leading up to the game had a big impact - I think the announcers even said they didn't show the cohesion that should come from training (though I may be remembering comments about the Patriot's offensive line last night - I do remember thinking about the similarity). I thought the foul call that led to the Rapids' free-kick goal was pretty bogus. Nacho did very little to have the guy go down like that. Also, felt like Edwards distribution was pretty poor and that made Colorado's pressing even more effective. Will be interesting to see if/when Vaclik gets a shot. I feel like we're starting to see why Edwards isn't a starting quality keeper, even though his shot-stopping has been good.
