I have to credit Marko for doing a hell of a better job than Porter. It is nice to see a team with conviction playing. That said, I fear our record flatters to deceive. We really don’t have sufficient offensiive punch to maintain a top of the east position. I hope he can solve that.
They've also had nine home games and only five away. I don't normally chalk much up to that, but when you have really long home stands like this it has to have some effect on fitness and training.
I think Turner in general continues to flatter the defense, and outside of Gil we still really dont have an avenue to creating a scoring chance I dont know if Marko can get more out of what we have, and based on how and where we've spent resources so far I dont know how much more we can continue to throw at making improvements
They need to figure out how to use Turgemon in this formation or make an adjustment to make him effective. He scored 3 goals in 3 games last year, I don't think he has forgotten how to kick a soccer ball, but the lack of touches seems problematic. Is he just not getting where Gil, Langoni and the rest can pass him the ball? Or are the tactics ignoring that area of the field? I've seen strikers take a bit to adjust to MLS in the past, so I'm not panicking by any means, Also, I feel like they have slowly been opening up areas of the field as the team has gelled and progressed since the season opener, but it seems to me that the next adjustment is due. Nashville was more than happy to let them play wide, and after what felt like a number of games where they generated a better number of shots and shots on goal, both of those dried up. Sometimes you just got to let it rip a bit to tempt fate!
I always thought last year's roster had enough talent to at least make the playoffs, but Porter just did a horrible job managing. We may have the opposite of that going on with Marko squeezing everything he can out of the current roster. On the way out last night I heard Feldman & Charlie mention that expected goals was like 2.4 to 1.4 in favor of Minn. Turner bailed us out yet again. They were able to get shots on goal a bit too easily in the 2nd half. What I do like though is with Miller and Langoni on the field together, we can counter attack very effectively. More roster adjustment is needed. We have some depth on the back line - maybe we could swap on of them for some help in the attack. To me, Turgemon has done everything but score enough.
Another solid win. Yes, our record flatters us - but how nice, to have a gritty team that ekes out the close ones. Raines has been fantastic. He's just the sort of CM we've been needing - quick, hardworking, and tidy on the ball. Shame he talked himself into a suspension, as much as his complaint was warranted.
MLSsoccer.com has it 2.1 (MIN) to 2.0 (NER). Agreed. He has 2 goals this year (one in the Cincy game where everyone scored). But he was instrumental against MIN, drawing the early PK, and playing the give-and-go with Langoni for a well-played assist. To me, he's not fast enough to take the quick shot required with traffic in front of him, so it ends up getting blocked frequently. Still, 8 wins through May. Porter's teams managed 9 wins total in each of his 2 seasons. Ceballos at RB was a bit of a surprise, but he did well. Best attendance of the year (26,385), probably due to being the last home game until after the World Cup. So glad Chancalay didn't score.
Fully agree that our record is likely deceiving. I guess I consider it good karma after a couple years of pulling out ties or losses instead of victories. This year we seem to be getting the breaks that turn 'would be ties or losses' into wins. We already have at least 4 come from behind victories when I don't think we had any the prior two years.
8 wins is 13 games is absolutely wild, but I'm loving it At the end of the first half, that was definitely a PK-worthy, right? Or do you think the ref was like "c'mon guys, I've already called 2 PKs this half...I can't call a third, can I?" Seemed like a textbook foul to me
I thought it was more egregious than the one called against Raines, but I'm admittedly biased... I think your ref mind-reading above is accurate. If he called that, they'd be diving all night long.
I wanted to try and catch a replay of that, but the Apple highlights didn't include it. I know watching from the Fort, it seemed a foul but obviously that's a long distance. I did get texts from a couple of people watching at home saying it was a penalty though.

If we're talking about the one where Gil was tackled from behind, I agree. I think the ref was trying not to call PKs for the Revs all night (and seemed pretty disinclined to call fouls against Gil in particular). The one that did get called for us, was forced on the ref by VAR - that in itself should say something: a PK was earned under his nose but he didn't want to call it. I loved how we came out with urgency in the 2nd half and regained the lead. After that, it seemed we almost immediately started settling in to defend the game out. FWIW, it worked, but we should be able to get counter-attacking goals against teams pressing hard late, but it never seems to work out for us. That's a little worrying. Other than PKs, I'm not seeing as much magic out of Gil as in the past - though he did have one really sweet pass to put someone behind the defense. I think Turgemon's unselfishness deserves a call-out. When the guy is draped, he's not at all reluctant to lay it off. Ironically I think he's being affected somewhat by being too strong - he's being defended very physically, yet draws very few calls. We've certainly come close to maximizing our home field, but going forward I'm somewhat concerned that our thin margin at home will get flipped out on the road. But, the team has built up a ton of confidence through this streak and that has them playing pretty free. It would be pretty sweet to get a result on Wednesday and go into the break in such outstanding form. Then, a two-month break is going to be a huge hurdle for every team - it's a big challenge that some will handle better than others. Big test for Mitrovic.
Honestly, I've felt the same.....especially against Philadelphia a week prior. I felt like there were unforced turnovers or turnovers against light pressure. I feel bad saying that because the guy has historically been amazing and it is absolute blasphemy to say anything negative, but since you brought it up I will at least say I know what you are talking about. I suppose even superman can have an off day though, so I'll choose to focus on the positive and say it was just a bump in the road....but time will tell.
I think Peyton Miller has been the game changer for us on offense. We haven't seen this kind of 'speed threat' since Tajon Buchanan (I was hoping Borrero would the 'the guy'). It definitely opens up the offense for us when Miller is on the attack.
I think you mean Saturday. But in regards to Gil, agreed. He was actually (and I can't believe I'm saying this word in relation to him) bad against Nashville. Overhitting passes, trying to take on too much, and ... well, just bad. I noted that after the game as well, that we don't have anyone that can back him up.

A big part of the reason we don't have any backup is that he plays virtually every minute he's healthy (which, knock on wood ...). He did have one really sweet play where he put someone in clear behind the defense (Langoni,?), which led to a good chance, but no goal. Overall, I think he's had the ball less - which in some ways is good (he's taken less of a beating, teams can't stop us by fouling him as often, we're more diversified), but I think maybe its hurt him in terms of getting into a good rhythm.
