For example the card system in soccer was invented by Ken Aston, a English Referee (who was the head of FIFA's Referee Committee) was asked by the German Center of the England vs Argentina match in the 66 WC to come up with a better means of communicating cautions and send offs when the referee and the players spoke different languages. FWIW, I attended a Ken Aston referee training camp for AYSO some 25 or 30 years ago. I never forget him telling us, that one of the referee's primary duties was to protect the more skilled player (from bullying tactics). This is something that was seemingly lost in this WC in favor of a desire to let the game flow freely. This was clearly a mistake as it led to some butt ugly soccer.

I'm not disagreeing with you and yes star players need to be protected from players going out of the realm of play but did he also mention how they manage the situation when the star players does the baiting and bullying or is it all under one umbrella to protect the player no matter the situation. I bring this up because I saw Messi pass the ball and deliberately run into the closest defender and plop down like he hit a brick wall, it was Messi initiating the contact to try to win a foul that wasn't there, at least the ref ignored the play but more often than not it would go in Messi's favor, just curious on how the thought process is/would be.

I thought the diving and thuggery for this tournament as a whole was pretty mild. But that is in part because I remember back when WCs were much rougher. I think it was 1990 when against some teams Maradona had his legs taken out every time he touched the ball. Clear reds now but no cards issued in most cases that WC. And wasn’t Tab Ramos’s jaw broken in 1994 by a Brazilian player and IIRC & no card given. It’s true that in this tournament players were knocking each other around, engaging in extracurricular pushes, shoving, toe-stepping-on and some diving and playacting went on. But no studs to the chest like in the France WC Final and in fact few truly highly dangerous fouls went on in the games I watched. Fortunately I didn’t see the guy who got his leg broken so I can’t speak to that. Also when I watch Liga Mx games I often see much worse on field behavior. Note well: What some Argentina players did post Final match was pure thuggery - not excusing that.
My recollection was that it was definitely not the latter, of the skilled player trying to win a nonexistent foul. In fact my recollection is that it was almost situational, was a player exhibiting a skill fouled by a player in a manner that was inconsistent with the concept of fair play. Foul recognition got some attention, but at our/my level it was very hard to get it right in real time when the players (college players) were so far above us.

I think all this stuff comes in generations, what was once acceptable has become not acceptable then back to acceptable etc etc for example basketball we had the Showtime Lakers era, then the slog Miami/Knicks era, then stuff in between (lapsed fan during this time period) and now the foul baiting and players moving away from fundamentals, like not holding the pivot foot, traveling and palming the ball as far as soccer, its generating so much money that I feel we are in the foul baiting era, where its all about generating income, the Kalshis and polymarkets are a big influence in sports and in my opinion ruining sports, back then when you went full studs it was out of malice, nowadays its out of getting an advantage that will benefit my situation financially.

Other than hockey and sometimes baseball, I get a chuckle whenever non-combat sports athletes try to be tough guys and pretend like they want to fight. They're not going to do shit and it's all bark and no bite and pretending to be a tough guy. Please...it's laughable and they just look dumb as hell.
I'd say hockey and american football, I laugh at baseball fights every time you see the bullpens lollygagging in the outfield on the way to the where ever the fight is with no enthusiasm to get there and are all tuckered out walking back to the bullpen, without even being close to the action
Lol...true about the bullpen players...hahaha As for american football, there are the occasional fights, but being fully armored with full-faced helmets limits the fighting that occurs. It comes down to players just pulling on each other's face masks. Basketball used to have more fights, but it's really toned down and today's players are like soccer players.
