Just wanted to share this with everyone; this weekend i spent time at a couple local soccer pubs in the Manhattan trying to gauge support for the NASL Cosmos and MLS expansion efforts in Queens. I spoke with dozens of fans of soccer/football and the level of support about the Cosmos returning was overwhelming. Literally maybe one out of 20 people i spoke to weren't interested , the rest all signed up to be a part of the Cosmos supporters movement.

I always knew that interest existed for a NYC club (in MLS) but this was the first time i truly got to witness first hand the power of the Cosmos brand. Spoke to some fans that remembered going to those games in the 70's and 80's, others that simply are aware of the legacy and believe it should be back as NYC's true soccer club...etc. There is defeinatly a sense of legitimacy to the Cosmos in the eyes of all soccer fans i spoke to, even the few that did not sign up agreed it was a good idea. (most that didn't sign up were on holiday here and i think 1 was a RB fan but even said if the Cosmos came to MLS he'd seriously consider them)

It may be 30 years later, but the Cosmos name still resonates here, this much is clear when you are discussing the team in the city pubs. Very encouraging stuff though and I will be trying to get as many fans signed up as I can over the next few months. Have a feeling this is going to end up being big.

when we first started this dude - i was of the side that didnt want the Cosmos - wanted something new etc but when we were in the pubs trying to talk about NYC FC no one really seemed to care but as soon as the Cosmos came in the picture and we started working with them -interest doubled and tripled - not only internationally but locally as well (as you stated)

Its shocked me and now i feel that the league has to name it the Cosmos name will lure more people to the team...then its up to the team to keep them there

It has always been a great brand. But it is the quality improvement and public recognition of MLS that makes the brand usable now. Cosmos on a team in MLS 1996, no go. But put Cosmos on a team in MLS 2016 (or so), and it works. IOW, MLS is the ice cream and Cosmos is the whipped cream.

The brand has always been usable, the realtive impact of the brand within MLS constructs can be debated. But the interest i encountered was equally enthusiastic about NASL next season and the team playing its first competitive matches in 30 years.

My initial presumption going out this weekend was i would get 1 out of 2 people to decalre their support and interest in the Cosmos next season and beyond, I figured 50% would be about right, but what i encountered was an overwhelming positive support and it was more like 9 out of 10 declared interest. Interestingly of the people that didn't decalre or sign up only was was actually against it and he was a Red Bulls fan...yet still stated to me if Cosmos play in MLS he'd check it out...the others were Brits on holiday and not living in NYC.

Your first post indicated that you were asking people to sign up as "Cosmos supporters". Therefore it is not surprising that a Red Bulls supporter did not sign up.
