It's the fault of the fans for liking the draw!

It's not overconfident to say the US got a good draw and they should expect to advance. It is overconfident to pencil in 3 points against Slovenia and Algeria, there's plenty of work to be done.

I think our confidence is entirely dependent on the team we can put out there come june. When healthy our collection of players combined should be enough to get us through. Still alot of question marks in terms of who is going to be fit.

It's nice to see that, by and large, we got the easiest group we can face out there.

To put it simply... North Korea would be a bit confident with our draw!

It's not overconfidence. Is it a crime to be happy with the draw? Just let us savor today. We could have been North Korea there in Group G, for heaven's sake. Who wouldn't take Algeria and Slovenia over a group with Brazil/Portugal/Ivory Coast?

Some? It seemed like 80% of the US fans had that as our in the bank 3 points. How our guys can be overconfident is just mindblowing to me. I certainly hope that they have more perspective than our fans currently have.

We're just happy my Polish comrade. I agree though and I said it in another thread, there's a lot of work that needs to be done. Slovenia isn't a walk.

I think the real optimistic mood around these parts today is because it could have been a lot worse. Also, I think people are happy we'll get a crack at England on neutral ground. Anything could happen... let's just stay optimistic for a little while here on BS... please? haha

First off, US fans were tired of Groups of Death. Any group that doesn't include two Top 10 teams would have made US fans happy (well, unless Ivory Coast was in it).

Secondly, just as they said on ESPN, if the US can't defeat Slovenia and Algeria, then they don't deserve to advance.

Thirdly, since most of us think that the US deserves or is capable of advancing, then that would mean victories over those two teams.

    Fourth, https://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1257797
The US has minimal travel so there will be no jetlag, they have more exposure in South Africa's playing conditions than any of their group opponents, and the US has already secured one of the best, if not the best, training grounds in South Africa.

There are plenty of reasons for overconfidence. The only reason for pessimism with this draw is simply being an average US fan.

...and I agree. If you're an American, you're jumping for joy today. The only better draw would have been to switch out England for South Africa. There shouldn't be any pessimism going in with the draw we have. BB better have our guys whipped up into a frenzy for the England match and attack England like bats out of hell!

None of this bunker down bullshit - it's like killing time until your opponent finds the net.

    Exactly.

The only thing that connects the 2006 Ghana team to the 2010 Algerian team is the continent that their countries sit on. And NOTHING ELSE.

Then we would have to trade Algeria for a S. American team.
Host country, especially in the opener... no thanks. Trading Algeria for anyone out of S. America... no thanks.
Once they combined us in the pot w/ Asia+NZ then our dream group became Any seed + USA + Algeria + Slovenia.

Sure, I can think of teams I'd rather play but none that were available to us given the way the pots were built. So while Slovenia and Algeria are not 6 automatic points they are the closest we could get.

We fans can be as overconfident as we want. I have no doubt in my mind that the players and coaches won't go into the games overconfident, and that's all that matters.
