NASL 2014 Matchday 12 at Carolina Review

    July 26, 2014 – Carolina RailHawks vs Ottawa Fury FC – 3-0 L – Review

    Ottawa (4-1-2-1-2) – Gorrick 6; Soria 5, Trafford 6, Richter 4, Davies 4; Ryan (c) 6; Maykon 6, Donatelli 5; Ubiparipovic 5; Dantas 6, Heinemann 5

Carolina (4-2-3-1) – Goodwin; Low, Tobin, Scott, Graye; Davidson, Albadawi; Elizondo, Enzo, Shipalane; Schilawski

Ottawa Subs – Haworth 7 (Maykon), Paterson 6 (Ubiparipovic), Mayard 5 (Donatelli)

    Ottawa Goal – N/A; Assist – N/A

Ottawa Injuries and Suspensions: LW Oliver (out), GK Peiser (out)

This was the toughest loss in the Fury FC’s short history. Haworth looked great in the 2nd half, Ryan and Maykon played great passes in the 1st half, but could have done more defensively, and Dantas showed nice moments but needs to build up chemistry with Heinemann if the two are to succeed together. Some quick notes below on a game with many speaking points.

Diamond midfield formation: This formation looks great on paper but does not work well on the field, especially in a defensive point of view, and has mostly gone out of use in Europe these days. Often, the DM is isolated in covering the area in front of the defense, while the two CM’s are not in a great position to help cover the flanks, nor help the DM. With two ST’s and a CAM on the field, that just adds on even more defensive responsibilities to the three other mids and the defenders, as, at least in a 4-3-3, there are the two wingers to help cover the flanks.

Maykon was great with his passing and dribbling, but was not helpful in defense at all in his LCM position in the diamond, whether helping Soria cover the left flank or helping Ryan cover the area in front of the defense. A great example of this was seen in the 29th minute, as the Carolina RB found himself in acres of open space for a cross, as Soria was busy marking their RM Shipalane (who had an incredible game) near the penalty area, and Maykon was nowhere to be found helping in defense, in complete no-man’s land.

Donatelli was similarly lacking in his advanced RCM position, unable or unwilling to help Ryan or Davies properly in defense. This was seen in the 32nd minute, for example, with Donatelli and Maykon in no position to help on D properly, and Richter having come out too far forward to try to cover the players, and being easily beaten on the through ball.

Simply, if Ryan was beaten for any reason in midfield, then there was nobody else to help cover the Carolina mids, and they had all the time in the world to pick out the through balls past Richter and the other defenders. The 5 minutes between the 34th minute and the 39th minute has numerous examples of this situation, and Ottawa was lucky to only concede 1 goal during this period.

First goal: The more offensive-minded players, such as Maykon and Davies, were caught up too far ahead in their respective positions when Ottawa lost possession on a Heinemann header in midfield. Ryan is tripped up while he’s tracking back (but which was never going to be called a foul), Trafford was slow in going to the left flank to challenge the cross, and Richter was caught out on the deflection, with Davies too late to help deal with the cross.

Second goal: This goal was simply a culmination of all the defensive breakdowns in the first half by the Fury. Since there was no LW, Maykon comes out to challenge the Carolina RB. Ryan is now isolated in mid, and the RB passes to the space between Ryan and Richter. The Carolina mid receives it, with Ryan not challenging at all, and plays a brilliant through ball past Richter, who came out half-heartedly to challenge, and the ST puts in a gorgeous chip to make it 2-0.

Third goal: No particular breakdown, per se, just a good play by Carolina on their incredible right flank, and a rare mistake by Gorrick, who has shown that his one Achilles’ heel this season may be crosses in the air. Gorrick made incredible saves throughout the game, no doubt, but the mis-handling of this cross, and being too early off the line on the second goal, hurt Ottawa this match.

NASL 2014 Matchday 13 at Minnesota Preview

August 2, 2014 – Minnesota United FC vs Ottawa Fury FC – Preview

Ottawa Injuries: CB Omar Jarun (doubtful), CM Tony Donatelli (doubtful), LW Oliver (day-to-day), RB Drew Beckie (day-to-day)

    When: Saturday, August 2, 2014 @ 5:30pm EDT

Where: TCF Bank Stadium, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN (Watch at NASLLive.com; Listen at CFRA 580AM)

Excerpt from match preview on RedNation Online

“Ottawa Fury FC hits the road again, travelling to Minnesota this week to face the NASL Spring Season champions on Saturday as it attempts to break its 4-game winless streak and scoring drought. The league match between the two sides has been shifted to TCF Bank Stadium at the University of Minnesota, and immediately follows the International Champions Cup friendly between Manchester City and Olympiacos, as Minnesota is expected to better the NASL single-game attendance record that Ottawa set just 3 weeks ago in their fall season opener against the New York Cosmos at TD Place.

Ottawa sits on 1 point after its first three matches in the Fall Season, having lost 3-0 away at Carolina last Saturday in a match in which they were dominated, particularly in the 1st half. Minnesota, meanwhile, sits on 7 points after its three matches, most recently conceding an injury-time equalizer in a 1-1 away draw with Atlanta. Minnesota is an impressive 4-1-0 in its league matches at home, while Ottawa has accumulated a record of 1-1-4 in its away league matches.

Ottawa LW Oliver’s status remains day-to-day, as he continues to nurse an ankle injury, while RB Drew Beckie, who made a return to the bench in the club’s previous match, also remains day-to-day for the Fury. Both players are expected to return to the 18-man matchday squad against Minnesota. GK Romuald Peiser finalizes his buildup to full match fitness after his move from Academica de Coimbra in Portugal. RedNation Online understands that he will be in the matchday squad, and may potentially push Devala Gorrick for a spot in the starting lineup. CB Omar Jarun and CM Tony Donatelli have picked up training injuries this week, and are doubtful for the matchday.

The offensive drought has worried Ottawa supporters as well, and the formation may yet shift from the 4-1-2-1-2 diamond formation employed last week, perhaps back to the 4-3-3 formation that the players have performed the most admirably in so far.”

From Minnesota United FC: “The TCF Bank Stadium field is just 65-yards wide – nearly ten yards narrower than most soccer stadiums. For a team like United, which plays well from the wing and works the ball outside-in, a narrow field poses some unique challenges… Add to that attack a new signing, Rafael Edgardo Burgos, who has been a prolific scorer for his national side and available for play Saturday, going forward United will be extremely dangerous.”

NASL 2014 Matchday 13 at Minnesota Review

    August 2, 2014 – Minnesota United FC vs Ottawa Fury FC – 2-1 L – Review

    Ottawa (4-3-3) – Peiser 8; Soria 5, Trafford 7, Beckie 6, Richter 6; Ubiparipovic 7, Eustaquio 7, Paterson 6; Haworth 7, Heinemann 5, Davies 7

Minnesota (4-2-3-1) – Hildebrandt; Pitchkolan, Calvano, Dias, Venegas; Vicentini, Franks (Jordan 76′), Daley (Watson 71′), Mendes (Kallman 87′), Ibarra; Ramirez

    Ottawa Subs – Oliver 6 (Davies 64′), Dantas 7 (Heinemann 69′), Mayard (Eustaquio 87′)

    Ottawa Goal – Ubiparipovic (50′); Assist – Haworth (50′)

Ottawa Injuries and Suspensions: Donatelli, Jarun

A detailed match recap will be posted later on RedNation Online from Stuart and I. For a couple of quick points on the game, Ottawa played quite well in their favoured 4-3-3 formation, with Haworth looking lively on the left wing, and Eustaquio stepping in admirably for Ryan, who went off injured during warmups.

The defense was much more solid than last week, with Richter playing well at RB, and Peiser having a monstrous 2nd half. The Minnesota penalty was quite debatable, in terms of whether it occurred inside or outside the penalty area.

Fury goal at 90th minute to tie and grab a second point.
4K plus not bad attendance. Playing better at home and starting to find the goal a win may draw some more attention from the Ottawa sports fans to go out to the matches.
Just the start of this though. Football and CFL REDBLACKS are taking the center stage.
With RogersTV coverage also still new. Building more programing for the FURY similar to the 67's will likely come and grow the Fury like the 67's grew.

Wow did not realize that Indy has not one a home match yet this season. Just proves how hard it is to win as an expansion club from basically scratch. Give props to the sports fans who continue to support the two expansion clubs.
Both the Eleven and the Fury are part of first class ownership groups and the fans likely see that success on the field will come because of it.
The Fury are really in a good position with a successful Academy already being in place for some years now. Also being in the NASL they have the ability to sign some top young Canadian Players who are not ready for MLS action. Can catch them before they leave for a lower division over sees. As well as Canadian Players who may have come out oof MLS Academies as well

For the Fury being under the OSEG umbrella the marketing plan is crossed for the CFL, OHL, and NASL franchise. With both the stadium and Arena connected and both reno'd opens all possibilities in creating a brand for not just soccer but sports fans in general in Ottawa.
Already the 67's have a strong partnership with RogersTV Ottawa for game broadcasts and weekly show. The Fury have connected to RogersTV as well. The Network is easily accessible for most in Ottawa. Sports fans are already very familar with the 67's coverage works nicely adding the Fury
