Forgetting the selfish, egotistical crap he pulled at the end of his time here which tore the team apart, undermined the coach and was largely responsible for the Crew hitting rock bottom, Dooley was STILL a long ways from "the best player" in CBus history. He was very much my favorite player, and was a very positive, steadying influence early on. But he was in his late thirties, was well past his prime, and I just don't see how he even enters into the equation. McBride, no doubt. But surprisingly to all the nay-sayers who claimed he would stink up the joint, a year from now Hejduk could be a solid contender. He has been a revelation.
McBride has been the most important player no doubt. But I think Stern John was the best player as far as making an impact on the field when he was here. There were times when he was unstopable. How many hat tricks does McBride have? And he was the most entertaining player to watch.
gotta agree with crewdust. stern john was the best player to wear a crew jersey other than big bad brad...during his time with the crew the man was practically unstoppable.
stern made the biggest impact here and was most entertaining to watch, definitely. mcbride has a better vision, better distribution, better defending, and a great aerial game; stern is a better dribbler and poacher. he works better in tight spaces when he keeps the ball, brian passes well in tight space. a few years ago i would have said stern was clearly a better shooter, and i think he probably still is, but the discrepancy is much less obvious now. i think if you take all the criteria, mcbride still beats stern because he has a better all-around game. one man's opinion, of course, and it doesn't really matter because i like them both.
You should also note that a lot of what Stern accomplished was BECAUSE of McBride. John recognized that McBride was a terrific in-close setup man, particularly with his back to the goal. Stern was the master at cutting off of BMB. Whatever else, he's not dumb. Additionally, McBride's ability in the air scares defenses to death, since one quick long ball into his noggin can cost you a game. So he was always marked up tight, giving John a little bit more room. The fact remains though that Stern recognized and capitalized on the situation. Hard to pick between them.
I wanted to vote for Cunningham just to get some people riled up, but I voted for McBride. John was an explosive scorer who often scored in bunches so he can overshadow all-around - and less subtle - performances. McBride, while not as explosive, keeps plugging along. In addition to success within MLS - 17 goals in 1996, a goal of the year winner, multiple all star appearances, etc. - McBride's obviously been successful on a more international stage (World Cup, Everton loan). Also, McBride's all around game seems to have gotten better. In the past it seemed like the Crew just whipped in balls for McBride to head. Now he's better with his feet, has improved his passing to the point where it's devastating and has no problem holding players off the ball.
Ham-Ham I too thought about voting for Jeff. Not to rile anyone up, but because he's an outstanding player that deserves atleast one vote. I mean Buddle has one nod in his direction. . I voted for Hejduk because I complained earlier that there was no Hejduk choice..But honest, you guys, Cunningham shows many flairs of brilliance and someone come out and vote for him.....please?
If we win the Cup this season, BMB would be the best Crew player ever. He has been part of the successful teams that were in the past and has been a member from the beginning. I would place him ahead of Friedel and Stern John. Both those players are/were better, but not over the time and in a Crew uni. if he never wins a Cup, I would have to vote for Yeagley then.
Buddle and Cunningham are both showing well. Every time Cunningham comes to San Jose, he is trouble for us. But I voted for McBride.
Clarify the question: Best at the highlight of his career, or best while he played for the Crew? For me, different answers.
