Memory Lane: Newcastle United vs Liverpool (Anfield 1996) Just saw a 30 minute highlight show of the famous encounter between Liverpool and Newcastle United played at Anfield in the 1995-1996 season. I can't believe that it's been more than ten years since that game as I remember watching that live on television. It was voted as the best game of the Premiership (1992-2002) when the league was celebrating its 10th year of existence. So many things have changed. First, the grass at Anfield on that night was abismal. You could see a new patch of grass implanted in the center circle and the rest of the pitch was what Mourinho referred to Stamford Bridge last season, "potato patch." With the Premiership now beaming into so many homes across the globe, you'd be hard pressed to find a pitch like that at Anfield today. Those kits of yonder years. Liverpool's kit was made by Adidas (like it is today after years in the Reebok wilderness). But those were heavy duty kits with that wool-like collar. I had forgotten Newcastle's away kit colors until I saw that fan wearing the horizontal burgundy-blue striped shirt with the famous "Newcastle Brown Ale" ad smack in the middle. And then those horrid Adidas jackets worn by coaches on the bench (on both benches)...that 90s zig zagging three stripes that made you dizzy. Finally, the quality of players. Stan Collymore, John Barnes, Ian Rush (in his twilight years), Macca, McAteer, Scales, Ruddock (that fat f**k) and a young and vibrant James. Newcastle boasted Les Ferdinand, David Ginola, Tino Asprilla, Beardsley, Phillipe Albert, Srnicek in goal.... in the end, it was a perhaps the best game still to date in the Premiership as it sealed Newcastle's dramatic blunder to hand the title back to Man Utd (like the way the Mets relinquished the NL East to the Phillies) after the Geordies lead the Premiership by 12 points at one point. That 30 minute clip brought back so many memories.
Re: Memory Lane: Newcastle United vs Liverpool (Anfield 1996) UEFA Euro 2008 Qualifiers Scotland 1 : 2 Italy Israel 2 : 1 Russia wow
I heard that ESPN2 is gonna broadcast the Euro 2008 this summer. Should be fun to watch. I think i'll join one of my coworkers in rooting for Romania.
Re: Memory Lane: Newcastle United vs Liverpool (Anfield 1996) damn croatia 2:0 up against england at half time...wasn't expecting this
Re: Memory Lane: Newcastle United vs Liverpool (Anfield 1996) I am not surprised at all. England is a bloated pig. Say goodbye McClaren.
Re: Memory Lane: Newcastle United vs Liverpool (Anfield 1996) I have reassessed my opinion of the beautiful game after last night's results, and now absolutely love it again Euro 2008 is going to be a strange one though... Scotland won't be there so I can't support them, and England won't be there so I can't support their opponents. Croatia and Russia it is then.
England crash out of Euro 2008. The first major tournament they miss since World Cup 1994 in the United States. Shades of Graham Taylor?? Steve McClaren was the wrong man for manager and why the FA stuck with this man even after his bungles against Croatia (in Croatia) and that 0-0 draw with Macedonia.... is there no decent manager in England to take reigns of the team? But blaming him is far from the point as well as the starting eleven for England have been anything but stellar. They might score goals and make plays for their club teams, but I wonder if this result is finally the straw that breaks the camels back for the Premiership and the influx of foreign players into the league. It's really showed that the clubs are too dependent on foreign talent and that while players of the likes of Rooney, Gerrard, Lampard and co can hold their own, are they really anything without the Ronaldos, the Sissokos, the Makaleles? I expect a fallout with the reintroduction of foreigner quotas on English football. That's my call. By the way. Premiership teams should take note. Slaven Bilic is one hell of a manager. He was a stalwart player who did great things with Croatia. But what a debut as a manager on the international stage. He may finally resurrect Croatia into the type of team that shone at Euro'96 and France'98 as opposed to those dud performances in Korea-Japan 2002 and Euro 2004. BTW: Bravo Turkiye!! F**king brilliant!!
