Wilfried Nancy was fired after 33 days, Eric Ramsay after 44. What does that say about MLS?

When the world requires a barometer for a desperately short and unsuccessful tenure, it is probably easiest to turn to Liz Truss, who lasted 49 days as prime minister of the United Kingdom in 2022.

Truss’ departure became so inevitable that the Daily Star, a tabloid newspaper, set up a livestream of a lettuce in the final weeks of her reign to see whether its shelf life would outlast her premiership

Says more about the twats who made the hires and buckled under pressure than the coaches.

Niners once hired a college football coach who went 2-14 his first season in the pros. What if he had been fired after one season?

Canada looked like the better team for a while, but once they got a little tired, it was all over for them.

I think the US was initially trying to hit them with fast counters - playing very direct, and it was just leading to Canada getting counters going the other way. Once they decided, meh, let's just hold the ball and control the game and be patient for the goal, the game turned around. That happened maybe 1/2 to 2/3 of the way thru the 1st half. The advantage to that, even if you're having trouble scoring against a packed D, is that it tends to generate a lot of goal kicks for CA or trying to play out of the back from deep positions, and that's where the US could make hay with their press. They also get more corners that way, and that's where their goal came from.

The US passing and timing looked really good. But overall, it's fun to watch them -- you can tell the players love playing for Emma, and this may be the best team we've had in a long time.

I’m watching Bradley’s Babes vs MTL. Unfortunately, they gave up an early PK. Not looking so babelicious today. Cade doing nothing so far. Will be interesting to see if Michael Bradley changes stuff at the half.

Also, RBNY attendance looks pretty bad, i.e. Quakes level. (Altho, Quakes have done pretty well since the Messi game)

I didn’t realize MLS has had a Ukrainian referee since 2023. He’s 48 yo and has refereed Champions League games.

MLS gives Derrick Jones and Yaw Yeboah lifetime bans for betting on own games

    "
“In one instance,” the league said, “both players bet on Jones to draw a yellow card during an 19 October, 2024 match, which he received.

Yeboah and Jones overlapped for one season with the Columbus Crew in 2024. Jones stayed with the Crew for the 2025 season, while Yeboah signed with Los Angeles FC, with whom he made 17 appearances in 2025. He mutually agreed to cancel his contract with LAFC in January and now plays in China."

DeJuan Jones also played for Columbus. I'm glad it wasn't *that* former Crew player Jones.

Inter Miami owner says he pays Lionel Messi ‘$70 million to $80 million a year’

Inter Miami owner Jorge Mas said this week that Lionel Messi’s compensation amounts to about $70 million to $80 million a year, when including his ownership share in the team.

“The reason that I need to have sponsors and for them to be world class is because players are expensive,” Mas said in quotes carried by Bloomberg. “I pay Messi — worth every penny — but it’s $70 million to $80 million a year. Across everything.”

According to the MLS Players’ Association salary release, Messi makes a base salary of $12 million, with guaranteed compensation — calculated by the union as adding all bonuses amortized over the lifetime of the contract — at $20.45 million.

Messi was the highest-paid player in MLS last season, ranking ahead of LAFC’s Son Heung-min, who made $11.15 million in guaranteed compensation and Miami’s Sergio Busquets, who made $8.75 million. Busquets retired at the end of the season.

Messi, though, signed a deal with Inter Miami that included percentage ownership in the club, which significantly enhances the value of his contract. Miami was valued around $585 million in 2023 before Messi signed. Forbes valued Miami at $1.35 billion in its latest ratings this season.

While neither Mas, MLS nor Messi have confirmed the size of the stake Messi has in Inter Miami, Mas’s estimates indicate it is worth at least $60 million per year, if Messi’s salary structure remains the same in his extension — which runs through the end of the 2028-29 season.

Sources previously told The Athletic that Messi’s deal was worth between $50 and $70 million, depending on the valuation of Inter Miami’s franchise. As that has continued to rise, so too has the value of Messi’s contract. It is also not clear whether Messi received more equity when he signed his extension with Miami, which would boost the value of his time in MLS.

Jorge Mas, his brother Jose Mas and David Beckham are the primary owners of Inter Miami. Messi’s stake will activate upon his retirement, sources briefed on the deal previously told The Athletic.

Messi also signed separate contracts with Fanatics and Apple upon his arrival to MLS. The compensation from those deals, and any arrangements with Adidas, which previously had a deal with both Messi and MLS, is not included in his contract with Inter Miami.

Orlando has "off'ed" Oscar Pareja. Too bad, he's a good coach. They just haven't made good roster moves. But they've only won something like once in the last 13 games going back to last year.

    https://bsky.app/profile/orlandocitysc.com/post/3mgsfydadb22e

I was listening to the Soccerwise podcast (with Matt Doyle and other MLS pundits) and they were talking about coaches on the hot seat. One was Pareja (they hadn't known he was off'ed at the time). They thought the same thing - good coach, roster moves haven't been good.

Another was Neville in Portland, and how they have been manhandled so badly by rival Vancouver lately (something like 13 goals to 2 in the last 3 games), and how they seem to be perpetually spinning their wheels. They kind of concluded that Neville is the problem. I've always thought he would be incredibly grating to play for, with the constant screaming like a banshee during games, and in the postgames he's been throwing players under the bus.

Then another is Carnell in Philly. Is history going repeat itself - he had a great 1st year in St. Louis and then womp womp, the next year is terrible and he's fired. But that's another club that has made bad roster moves - dumping their best players and replacing them with worse players.

Who are some of the supposedly good former MLS coaches available right now?

    Jim Curtin
    Wilfred Nancy
    Eric Ramsay

    Who else?

Crazy CONCACAF game between San Diego and Toluca. Ingvartsen gets a PK red in the 7th minute or something. San Diego then goes on to somehow score 3 unanswered goals. Pellegrino didn't score but figured in all 3 goals, with a primary assist, a secondary assist on a great long diagonal ball, and a dummy or back heel (can't remember which).

Then Duah reaches out in the box with his right arm to swat away a ball headed to the back of the net for the 2nd red late in the game. 3-2 San Diego but now they have to go play Toluca at 9,000 feet, w/o their best defender. Best of luck.

Verhoeven is back from his injury and started at right back and looked good from what I can tell. The video quality on these broadcasts is so bad you can barely tell who is who. He looks like he filled out a little bit - doesn't look quite so much like a skinny teenager. Pretty sure he'd be a better RB than Benji. Technically a better player for sure though Benji is faster.

Not surprising, considering that FOX Sports 2 (as does FOX and FOX Sports 1) only broadcasts in 720p, quite the downgrade from the 1080p we’ve gotten used to watching the Earthquakes play on Apple TV (and even from the 1080i when they used to play on NBC Sports California / Bay Area).

    GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!!
