And those few complain about Judd, Jebo, Bouda, etc. The better question is... if he was a 1 season rental player maybe 2... is he any worse then the USL level guys we have? Clearly he's going to get playing time, and LAFC think he's good enough to add depth (which another thing we don't have).
It's not a one season rental player compared to Judd. It's a one season rental player compared to signing Hernán on a three-year contract with options for two more.
On the TSS Discord, people pointed out how unqualified Mikey Varas is to coach an MLS team, and they also deride the Berhalter coaching tree. Certainly if the USMNT New Zealand game is a fair indicator, the Quakes won’t be bottom of the West after SD joins the league.
LAFC signed 4 more guys as well https://www.mlssoccer.com/news/lafc-sign-bombino-ochoa-rosales-and-wibowo
The USA New Zealand game tells us nothing about what players will be on San Diego's roster, so we really can't make those kinds of judgments.
San Diego will have a better team out the gate then many expect. St. Louis, Chicago and Seattle levels? Probably not, playoffs? Good chance.
Considering the next MLS season starts in exactly 5 months , looking at our current roster and comparing it to theirs, I'm betting San Diego will have a better 2025 campaign than the Quakes. SDFC seems to have a few good players and Hirving Lozano is or was a very good player but I haven't seen him play since he left Napoli last summer.
personally, tho I like Chucky Lozano, I am not impressed with a team that is so diverse out of the gate, especially under a coach with such sparse credentials. Unless he is really vibrant (I haven't watched any of his pressers), he's going to have trouble earning the players respect. With such a coach, it would be better to have a core of 4-5 guys that have some basis for a shared culture, whether it is same former team, same history, same country, same ethnic group, same language, same age, same hair cut, same hair color, etc etc. And then build in diversity as layers around that core. And don't forget, the coach is going to have to also blend in a bunch of youth players from the Right to Dream academy relationship.
While PSV’s Americans Malik Tillman and Richy Ledezma, who made his UCL debut, struggled, McKennie (“always in the game”) received high marks from Gazzetta della Sport. Christian Pulisic opened the scoring in the 3rd minute of AC Milan’s 3-1 home loss to Liverpool. It marked his ninth goal in his 55 UCL games. Americans in 2024-25 UEFA Champions League Tuesday: Christian Pulisic (AC Milan) 90 minutes, 1 goal in 3-1 loss vs. Liverpool. Yunus Musah (AC Milan) on bench in 3-1 loss vs. Liverpool. Weston McKennie (Juventus) 75 minutes, 1 goal in 3-1 win vs. PSV. Tim Weah (Juventus) sub 21 minutes in 3-1 win vs. PSV. Malik Tillman (PSV) 90 minutes in 3-1 loss at Juventus. Richy Ledezma (PSV) 86 minutes in 3-1 loss at Juventus. Ricardo Pepi (PSV) sub 13 minutes in 3-1 loss at Juventus. Wednesday: Cameron Carter-Vickers, Auston Trusty (Celtic) vs. Slovan Bratislava Gio Reyna* (Borussia Dortmund) at Club Brugge Thursday: Folarin Balogun (Monaco) vs. Diego Kochen (Barcelona) * Note: Reyna is injured.
Most expansion clubs don't do that great other than Seattle and St Louis but I'm betting San Diego will sign a few big name DP's come January or February. That may help make them look respectable in their first year.
Well, these aren't both expansion examples, but in Tata Martino's great success at ATL and now MIA, he had a core set of players around which he built amazing teams. Maybe he was/is a fluke and extremely lucky. But I just don't see SD being either.
Cool! In a study conducted by FOR SOCCER, fans were asked to list up to five teams they care about most, resulting in over 200 teams from around the world. Inter Miami CF (8) and LA Galaxy (9) cracked the top 10 in the United States, while Club América (12) and Chivas (15) made it… pic.twitter.com/ZcUNFParCc— Favian Renkel (@FavianRenkel) September 17, 2024
Man this is really sad, i remember managing my dads bar in San Jose during the world cup and watching the games with some Italian fans , it was captivating watching Toto score all those goals and how the country just fell in love with him .
