Both teams are already through, and Cincinnati will play at home in all rounds unless they play Columbus, so it makes sense to rest players before the knockout round.

San Jose should be an appealing destination for Asian players but for some reason we've never dipped into the market. MLS gets little respect over there but the exchange rate/pay, the opportunity to play in a different style league and learn English, plus far better Asian food compared to Europe should make it a decent option for mid-career guys in Japan/Korea who aren't top 5 league material.

it seems to me, if MLS really wants to make money, they should concentrate more on playing summer friendlies as opposed to focusing on the Leagues Cup.

    Top 5 Crowds:
    1. Barcelona vs. Real Madrid (East Rutherford, NJ) 82,154
    2. Liverpool vs. Manchester United (Columbia, SC) 77,559
    3. Manchester City vs. Chelsea (Columbus, OH) 71,280
    4. Liverpool vs. Arsenal (Philadelphia, PA) 69,879
    5. Barcelona vs. Manchester City (Orlando, FL) 63,237

I think if MLS thought it out and made the friendlies into an actual tournament or round robin format, the games could be pretty competitive and probably very entertaining.

The teams are already having to travel to the USA and play matches so I don't see how much more difficult it is to play in a what would be a 3-7 game tournament.

Yes, and we could do that with Liga MX teams too! Oh wait, we are, that's Leagues Cup. Nevermind!

Games involving Barcelona , Real Madrid , Liverpool , Manchester United , Manchester City , Chelsea and Arsenal will bring in more interest, fans and revenue than most Liga MX teams.

And I'm sure those teams keep most of the revenue generated in addition to the appearance fees.

There's the sad irony: fans would rather not see MLS teams play.

It because there is a stigma passed down from person to person that MLS Sucks, when even the MLS fans we have here talk shit about everything MLS does so what do you think will happen. Its the double standard of life and everything involved. Everyone is a double standard for everything unless it applies to them then it becomes an issue.

Reading Gary’s book I came to appreciate how soccer in the South Bay was kept alive by all those intl friendlies and tournaments organized by Peter Bridgwater during the period between NASL and MLS. I had no idea.

Yes they most certainly would show up watch MLS teams play those international clubs and have many times.

Just look up the attendance when the Quakes played meaningless friendly games against top teams.

Here is one off the top...

    https://www.sjearthquakes.com/news/...er-united-played-scoreless-draw-levis-stadium

    International Friendly

San Jose Earthquakes 0-0 Manchester United

July 22, 2018 – Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif.

    Attendance: 32,549

I believe they also sold out against Atletico Madrid at Candlestick Park in 2014.

If there was a tournament format in place, I'm sure even more would show up.

Bridgewater always tried getting big name Latin Players for the Clash early on to try and capture that market, every time we tried to get a guy the Galaxy would swoop in. The biggest ones we missed was Carlos Hermosillo, Danny Pena and Martin Machon. We ended up with Daniel Guzman and Juan Pablo Rodriguez who never played a game, but had a great career in Mexico. We only had him on loan in 1998 and never played the guy. Fail Fail Fail

But Bridgewater was very keen to get us International stuff.

We were the first team to do an International Tour in 1996 in China.

Then in 1997 we did a huge International game with amazing pre-game ceremony against Aston Villa, It had all kinds of special appearances and stuff including a rolls royce on the field.

Trends continued into 1998 then stopped when Bridgewater was fired.

    Huh? “Everyone”? “Stigma”?

I’m a Quakes fan. I watch MLS because the Quakes play in it. I have season tickets. The fact it’s a retirement league for the Gareths of the world doesn’t prevent me from attending games.
