how is the squad shit? Good chunk of the players were here back in 2014, we have 3 youngsters plus the return of Gomez and a few new defensive players. Biggest question mark is defense but we'll see what Low plays on Saturday, I think it's too early to say they are shit. Plus every team in the tournament has problems, there is no perfect or near perfect team.
you forgot slowpoke Mertesacker, who has played in WC from 06-14, in the starting 11 for most of those WCs. But otherwise pretty much, as you said. My only doubt is defense but I had the same problem going into WC 14 and we won having conceded only 4 goals in 7 matches. Some of those goals against wouldn't have happened if Lahm was playing right back instead of midfield.
that's actually not fully true look up the lineup on wikipedia he was starting 11 and on transfermarkt you get his playing time and Per played Portugal-90 min Ghana- 90 min USA-90 min Algeria-120 France-bench all game Brazil-45 min Argentina-1 min he only lost his spot from France to the end, which is when Lahm went back to RB (which was at some point in the Algeria game when Mustafi got injured and also against Algeria happened to be a game where Hummels missed because of the flu. So when Hummels came back + Lahm back in defense he got benched.
