I have heard so many rumors about new clubs entering the MLS or wanting to enter i should say. Does anyone know anything definate about these teams? Like i have heard the Cosmos are trying to come back (of course without the old firepower), Seattle has a team, Rochester and long island are supposed to have good a league teams.
Yeah, here's a quick rundown of where things are. Cosmos are not reforming in any way that would involve MLS. If something happens it would be 2008 or later, but certainly not before then. Nothing will likely happen anyway. Garber has put out several lists of cities that are being considered for expansion in 2005. There will be no 2004 expansion, but the plan is to have one in 2005 that consists of two teams. Garber's first list of teams came out around the time of MLS Cup 2002, and it included these potential cities in no particular order: Seattle, Philadelphia, Oklahoma City/Tulsa, Rochester, Clevland, Minneapolis/St. Paul, and Atlanta. The rumor is that this list has changed, and that now there are 4 teams under consideration, but this hasn't been officially released, so it's still a rumor. The rumor is that Toronto (yes Canada) is one of the cities, but none of Seattle, Philadelphia or Rochester is one of the four. If that were correct, then the four would most likely be Oklahoma City/Tulsa (one of those two), Toronto, and one other from the group of Clevland/Atlanta. Now you are up to date. Who knows what will happen next. But in the same pre-MLS Cup 2002 interview that Garber did where he mentioned the 7 cities, he also mentioned that one of the cities would be announced within the next 365 days. At this point no owner has put up the money to join and build a stadium that MLS has accepted. But the two cities in Oklahoma appear to have everything in place, so expect one of those two to be an expansion city in 2005. -Tron
