with all the media saying the phils don't have a chance, looking at the rest of the national league, everyone else is as flawed...

and the mets ptiching staff is falling apart, if glavine and martinez show their age and fall to pieces, they have no pitching going into the play-offs...

but i'm not getting my hopes high here...

They Phils are also 5.5 back in the Wildcard chase, many teams are still in that race.

But that just means that they'll make a run of it in August, maybe even lead for a bit, and then just fall apart.

The Chase is on for Utley

That Bobby Abreu trade was the Phillies' way of saying they're now Chase Utley's team. And Utley's hitting streak is his way of saying he's ready for that job.

Here come some fun little Utley hitting streak nuggets:

• Whatever number this streak ends at, we easily could add one to it -- because Utley also got a hit in the All-Star Game.

• Our friends at the Elias Sports Bureau inform us that Utley and Jimmy Rollins are the first set of teammates ever to have 30-game hitting streaks within a calendar year of each other. But that's not all. We've determined they're the first set of teammates, period, to have streaks this long (for the same team).

• In fact, when Utley got to 34 games, it made the Phillies just the second franchise ever to have had two different players with streaks that long at any point in team history. The other was (who else?) the late, great St. Louis Browns. Their twosome: George McQuinn (34 in 1938) and George Sisler (41-game streak in 1922, 34-gamer in 1925). But unlike Utley and Rollins, McQuinn and Sisler never played together.

• So obviously, if you paid attention to that last note, you know Utley and Rollins are the first double-play combination ever to have streaks this long.

• According to Baseballmusings.com's day-to-day database, Utley has more hits (59) than any player in baseball during his streak. Derek Jeter and Justin Morneau (53 each) are second. Next most in the NL: Juan Pierre (52).

• No player in baseball has scored more runs than Utley (34) during the streak. Big Papi also has 34. Next most: Rollins (30).

• And only one man has more extra-base hits during the streak than Utley (25). That's Manny Ramirez, with 27.

• Finally, three players (with 100 or more at-bats) actually have a higher batting average than Utley (.401) since this streak began June 23: Nick Markakis (.422), Paul Lo Duca (.413) and Morneau (.402). Wait. Did we just say Nick Markakis?

More useless observations:

• If Abreu just keeps on walking in New York, he'll be the first player since 1998 to get traded in the middle of a season in which he was on the way to finishing in the top 10 in the majors in on-base percentage. Who was the last? How about Gary Sheffield, whose own contract issues got him deported from Florida in 1998 in that wild trade that turned Mike Piazza into a Marlin for a few days.

• When Hideki Matsui comes back, the Yankees' starting outfield of Abreu, Matsui and Johnny Damon will be earning a combined $38.5 million this season. But back in the good old days -- when Matsui was hurt, Abreu was still a Phillie and Damon was battling back issues -- the Yankees twice started an outfield of guys they're paying less than they'd be forking out to three guys who were getting the big-league minimum ($335,000). Aaron Guiel, Melky Cabrera and Bubba Crosby will get paid less than $800,000 combined by the Yankees this year (because Cabrera spent part of the year in the minors and Guiel spent half the season with the Royals). But the Yankees went 2-0 in the two games all three of them started in the outfield.

• Here's a question we keep asking: Now that ex-Indians Ben Broussard and Eduardo Perez have been reunited in Seattle, will they be the first set of teammates ever to platoon with each other for two different teams in the same season? This is the second time that BigSoccer has affiliated itself with MLSnet (or vice versa). It just puts an MLS Skin on BigSoccer. You can change it back by scrolling all the way down and using the pull-down menu.
