just let us be upset anyways wiebe https://t.co/xZ9xy3A6Pe— Major League Soccer (@MLS) September 26, 2024 I have no idea how the second point is called now.
******** Canada. Wilfried Nancy on the controversial PK vs CA:"sorry, I'm laughing because the ref said that it didn't affect the shot...he asked for the rules that they can't move, can't touch the crossbar, the ball, put the ball at the right spot. But when you have to make an obvious call…"— Lizzy Becherano (@lizzy_becherano) September 26, 2024 It really was notable that the ref made half of the players place the ball on the spot again even when it was clearly on the spot.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but Miami can qualify for Champions Cup with a win this weekend right? They're either winning the Supporter's Shield, or if the LA Galaxy somehow beats them to it they'd be one of the next two best finishers (everyone else in contention would either lose tiebreakers or already be qualified).
Miami has already clinched a spot in the 2025 CCC. They are guaranteed to be one of the top 4 on the Shield Table. One of those has to be Western Conference team but Miami has locked in a place.
They could finish tied for 4th and lose the tiebreaker to LAFC, but since LAFC is already qualified, that doesn't matter.
Wording is a little weird in that graphic...top four in Shield standings but I only see three places given out according to those standings? Non-shield winning conference top seed could not be in the top four spots right?
Yes, it's actually the two conference winners and the next two in the Shield standings. In most circumstances that will be the same as the top four but it's not guaranteed.
In somewhat related news, looking over the qualifying I have to throw it out there that the Caribbean Cup champion getting a bye to the Round of 16 is kind of outrageous; Cibao FC is the highest rated Caribbean team that could win that cup (at #85), but they'd still most likely be the lowest ranked team in the whole competition if they win. Whoever draws them in their bracket has a much easier matchup then say going against Club America or Columbus in the second round...

So the trophy for the USL Jägermeister Cup is a plate? Huh? WE ARE CHAMPIONS!#HailYeah #AShotAtGlory #USLJägermeisterCup pic.twitter.com/fhUZia2Fjb— Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC (@nocohailstormfc) September 29, 2024
The bigger question is why have another cup for only one league...isn't that the same thing as the league itself + playoffs?
My understanding that the Jagermeister Cup is separate from the USL-1 league. There are 12 teams so they are playing 22 regular season league games, everyone else home and away. And then a post-season. Rather than have teams play other teams three times they have started this in-season cup to get more games for teams. It has a group stage so this adds 6 or 8 games to every team’s schedule. And another trophy.
The greenish sash and trim on the New Mexico United away kit confuse me a little. If you told me the visiting team in Sacramento tonight was the Tampa Bay Rowdies, I'd probably believe you. Also, comb watch.
MLS Next Pro's regular season ends on Sunday, October 6. There is one game for every team except Atlanta who has already played all 28 games. The games are all on MLS Season Pass with all the East teams playing at 1 pm EDT and the West at 4 pm EDT. https://www.mlsnextpro.com/schedule/#date=2024-09-30 The playoff situation has 10 teams clinched for the 16 spots but it is wildly different in the two conferences. In the West 7 teams are in and there are 5 still alive fighting for the last spot. In the East only 3 teams have clinched and there are 7 teams alive for the last 5 spots. And almost all the seeding is yet to be determined except for the top two spots in the West. https://www.mlsnextpro.com/standings/#season=2024&live=true
Are we really really sure we needed more teams in the Champions League? At least 5-6 teams that played today are Europa League quality at best. https://t.co/SLk3kNJwyg— Joe Tansey (@JTansey90) October 1, 2024
I think he means USL quality. Thing is though they'll make so much money from being in the UCL they'll be able to invest in better players. Of course the side effect is that their domestic leagues will become totally uncompetitive.
The extra spots mostly went to bigger countries and 4 of the 5 blowout losers on Tuesday were in the group stage last year, so I don't think expansion has much to do with it.
Isn't that what's known as a "Money Grab", or is that particular phrase specifically reserved for the only successsful professional soccer league in the history of this country?
