just thought I'd share this.......very sad....mabye something we can do for the family http://www.nbc4.com/news/13279492/detail.html?dl=mainclick WINCHESTER, Va. -- A young soccer player died during a scrimmage Monday evening in Winchester, Va. Investigators said the 10-year-old boy was playing goalkeeper for the Winchester United under-11 team. They said he was positioned in the goal on a Millbrook High School soccer field. Coaches said action was taking place on the other side of the field when they heard a loud crash.
I can't tell you how sad this is. Although we do not know the details, generally (it will still happen) these types of things can be prevented. We, as coaches and parents, cannot let get lazy and we must mind other people's business, so to speak. When you see a goal that's not secured, whether it's your kid's team or a training session that you're just wandering by, you must be vigilent with goal safety. If it's not secured,,,,,step in and do something! If there are kids hanging on the nets or the cross bars, step in!! Like the crumpy man who used to yell at us as kids, it's our turn. Kids will be kids. We must be willing to hurt feelings and correct other parents' kids, whether the parents are right there or not. So sad.
Very tragic. What Matthew J. Cardillo says is true. The goals are very heavy but can be tipped over relatively easily by a person hanging on the bar or a gust of wind. They need to be secured at all times.
Wow, incredibly sad. And so damn preventable. As somebody who spent more than a few afternoons as a teenager fighting with those goals, I know what a pain it is to get those totally secured. But that is no excuse.
Heard about this, it was not on the news here in DE but my girlfriend was in VA and told me about it. This is a very sad story, I hope the family can find some peace soon.
Let's hope youth soccer clubs everywhere now realize the importance of securing those things. What a horrible thing to have happen.
I believe it is the referee's responsibility to ensure a safe environment, including a tacked down net and firmly set goal frame. I find myself wondering how he was killed. Did the frame break his neck? The hows don't really matter right now to his surviving kin. I hope they are able to put the grief behind them after a while, and then get on with their lives. RIP, little guy. GM
I live in Winchester and this happened at my daughter's high school. The goal was not secured and was a portable type. She has seen several boys struggling to move it. It must weigh 500 pounds. I have heard through local sources that they think the poor kid was climbing on it while the action was on the other side of the field. Somehow his foot got caught in the net. I imagine he fell and pulled the thing over onto himself. Blunt head/neck trauma was the cause of death. It was gruesome I have heard and won't get into the details here. All of you should make sure wherever you and your kids play, that the goals are anchored down. I imagine the school district here and the soccer assn. are facing a massive law suit.
