According to e-wire from US Soccer.

Actually Joe was quite please about this last night, excited about the plaque he will receive. He admitted to preferring a cash reward to pay for the renovation, but I noted he could take the plaque and pawn it for part of the expense.

Received 30 % of the votes - and oh yeah, RFK was named best stadium. (?????) Good job DC ballotbox stuffers!

That's great news. Somebody should tell Joe we're coming down next Friday to help him celebrate. :)

Myself and a couple of other BS members mentioned it to Jonny a little while back. On New Years Day Joe asked me about the Happy Hour. How many people, what was it for etc. He seemed quite appreciative that we were coming to summers.

Congratulations Joe on having the award to verify what we all know.

Well congrats to Summers! I'm not a fan of the joint, but anyplace that televises that much of the beautiful game deserves kudos.

Now off to a quality soccer bar - the cap lounge...

No, Crew Stadium was named best stadium with 37% of the vote. RFK was second with 19%.

However, the RFK crowd at the US/Uruguay game in May was named the "Best US Crowd" with 32% (US vs. Honduras in Seattle came in second with 27%).

I cannot believe that Tony Sanneh night got beat by the lousy sCrew's Buck-a-Brat night!? How can this bee when you've got a player dishing out crosses for fans to head home, that loses to serving greasy micro-dogs for $1?

As for RFK and Summers, I know I voted early and often for my hometown choices. Even if I rarely make it out to Summers, I'm glad they won. Now, if they had included a DC location on the list...

I'm glad Summer's won, but watching matches there really is like watching a match in a crowded Denny's.

I hope the renovation plans call for an infusion of atmosphere.

Agreed. Cap Lounge and Lucky Bar both have a better atmosphere.

Seriously, as if there is anyplace that could compete with Summers. Was there ever any doubt in your mind that Summers would run away with it?

Cap Lounge and Lucky Bar also don't have nearly the history or the reliability that Joe does. Yeah, you can catch an EPL match at those places - hell, you can catch those matches at Fado's too.

But I didn't see the "Soccer Nation" bars shelling out for Iran-Australia in 1998, the PPV US WCQ matches in 1997, or even, IIRC, the CONCACAF junior championships from a couple of months ago. Summers did...and I know that Summers will continue to.

Put it this way - there's a reason that fans who travel here from other cities want to see Summers when they get here, and that's not to mention Coach Arena and US Nats like Donovan who watch matches there. Yeah, the food still stinks (although the once-deservedly maligned service has dramatically improved in the last two years), but the place has history, tradition, and reliability. Every soccer fan in the US knows it.

Congrats Joe on a deserved honor.

Summers good soccer coverage bad food!

I went there last time ordered some burrito dish they had tasted like crap. I might add that the sandwiches are good but the rest is crap. Also my best friend Oscar use to work there and they exploited the little guy.

    P.S.
the itialian fake me out dish is also bad.

One more thing, why did summer charge 20 bucks for the each african nations games that's a total rip-off. Please...Joe stop ripping off people.

If you order the burgers or sandwiches - the basic bar food - you'll be fine. Actually, the fish and chips that they began serving during the World Cup is actually pretty good. The fish has a nice potato coating and isn't overly greasy. If you order anything else, you're on your own.

I mean - "Pasta N' Chicken Fingers"? [IMG]

Do you have any idea how much the satellite companies charge him? Joe breaks even or even loses money on a lot of the special event games, such as the ANC matches, that he shows. I don't think he broke even, even with a $10 cover per game, on the CONCACAF junior matches. I know he lost money on the Olympic matches a couple of years ago.

He is indeed getting a plaque - at least from what I understand. Don't know when though - anyone whose talked to Joe on this board? K?

I'm not the biggest fan of the place because of the service (except for Johnny, who works his a$$ off) but I'm optimistic the changes Joe is making will be for the good. I will give him business when I can and I will say this about Joe: When I was a regular Saturday/Sunday La Liga viewer he made sure the games were on. For that, I give him props and thumbs up on his award.

Congrats to Joe for his well deserved honor. As for Summers, Joe just re-signed a much more realistic DC area lease that has exactly double his previous rent. Also he's renovating the place soon as well. But the most important factor is that he goes way out of his way to cater to the soccer community, even if it's not a good business decision, because he wants to be the place for our soccer watching. That's the only reason we get things like the U-20's, African Nation's Cup, and other such tournament things.

Look, what do you want in a soccer bar. For me, it's the game being shown, good sight lines to several TV's at once (so we can watch EPL and Serie A at the same time, maddening though it is). And, he has no cover most of the time, so all you need to do is buy average priced bar food and hang out for 2 hours without being moved along.

I'm happy to support that, despite the food!

Hey has anyone been to the rock? Can anyone compare and contrast the differences/similarties between the rock and summers? Thanx

Yes, I have been to both places. The main difference between the two is that The Rock is closed. [IMG]

Sorry. The Rock, when it existed, had better food than Summers, but it was also much more expensive and the sightlines were nowhere near as good.
