Sad sad news on the Phillies front....... http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=4064793 God bless Harry the K
Re: Other Philadelphia Sports Thread X: We'll blow it next year Just remember, Whitey will be waiting for him. Glad he got to see the boys win it all last year.
Re: Other Philadelphia Sports Thread X: We'll blow it next year At least he got to call a winning World Series game...local broadcasters couldn't until '83.
Re: Other Philadelphia Sports Thread X: We'll blow it next year They're actually playing the game...and the announcers are just all over the place....i don't know whats going on
Re: Other Philadelphia Sports Thread X: We'll blow it next year I feel like my heart is broken. God bless Harry. The world is a lesser place without him.
Re: Other Philadelphia Sports Thread X: We'll blow it next year I grew up early with that voice, and it was always nice to here it during random games on the radio, no matter where I was...
Sorry for your loss - he was a great one. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=4064793 He and Jack Buck will now make one great team.
Re: OT: RIP Kalas I grew up listening to this man on WCAU. He was a great accompaniment on a sultry summer evening. Harry's probably up there doing a voiceover contest with Don LaFontaine, John Facenda, Barry White, Charleton Heston and God. Very sad today.
Re: Other Philadelphia Sports Thread X: We'll blow it next year Rest in peace, Harry. Good news is he's probably at a bar right now, and Phil Rizzutto bought the last round, and Harry Carey is buying the next one. I'm glad the Phils won last year, so the last playoff Phillies game with his voice says "The Phillies are World Series Champions." Never gonna be another one like him. God Bless.
Re: OT: RIP Kalas I remember being able to pick up the Phillies Radio Network feed on clear nights down in North Carolina when I was in college, and how Harry's voice carried me through the 1993 season. I am happy that my older son got to hear him work some games. I honestly didn't anticipate being this bummed out.
Re: Other Philadelphia Sports Thread X: We'll blow it next year A true Philly legend has gone. One of the elite few that everyone in this town has universally loved.
Re: OT: RIP Kalas You will be missed by a team, a city, and an entire generation Harry. I dont think I've ever rooted so hard for heaven to actually exist, so Harry & Whitey can hang out again and finally talk about the World Series win last year... RIP

A very sad day. I remember being in college when Richie Ashburn died and how shocking that was. Harry was a great announcer and I liked his football coverage as well. I'm glad I got to hear his call of the final out in this year's World Series. RIP, Harry. You'll be sorely missed.
I wonder if someone has YouTubed the extra-innings Mike Schmidt home run during the final series in Montreal in 1980 on WPHL (complete with Star Wars music)? Harry had the TV, and Andy Musser had the radio ("Long drive, HE BURIED IT! HE BURIED IT! HOME RUN MIKE SCHMIDT!").
Growing up in the Philadelphia area in the 1970's and 80's, and now after hearing tons of lesser announcers, I realized how lucky I was to grow up with Harry and Ritchie for baseball, and Gene Hart for hockey. I don't think Harry was ever the same after Ritchie died, even so, he was head and shoulders above his contemporaries. It's not just a sad day for the Phillies or baseball, it's a sad day for Philadelphia.
Kalas was a part of my childhood along with the Gusto Dunk, PRISM, PHL17 "The Great Entertainer," Gene Hart, the Miracle of the Meadowlands, the Flyers' long pants in 1983, old JFK Stadium, Gimbe!'s, and the BIGG sales at Strawbridge & Clothier. Philadelphia Fever games on Channel 17, too ... Fred Grgurev was God. Oh, and peep shows next to video arcades on Market Street back in the 70s.
Re: OT: RIP Kalas Ditto on the 93 season. I was at State and the only time they were on TV was when they played the Pirates or Braves, but the local AM carried them.... I always loved how it took him 15 seconds to say "Mic-key Mor-an-di-ni"
