Wasn't his name on the SE list a few years back the "knee biting midget of death"??? I think it was him... Jeff
Good luck, Richie! Thanks for reminding all of us why soccer is such a great sport for the little guy. You were tough and tricky and you never, ever quit on a play. I hated you often, but that was because you were on the other team. You will be missed.
Some of you may know that my boss is Goodlett's aunt. She told me that Ray left soccer and is going to seminary in California with the intention of becoming a preacher.
Ankle Biting Midget of Death (or ABMOD for short). I remember on one spanish language broadcast (was it the CONCACAF Champions' Cup held in Las Vegas- 99 or 00?) the announcer kept referring to him as the dwarf. But the dwarf was very good at what he did. Good luck Richie. Edit: Oops, didn't see Lowecifer already corrected the ABMOD...
A few weeks ago, Richie was working with youth clubs at Tyson’s. I had the chance to talk to him and thank him for all the great times for United. He understood that I could not wish him well with the Scum. Now, it is good to see him land well with Richmond. Best of luck, Richie. And thanks again.
My favorite Richie memory happened down here in Richmond a couple of years back. United came down for a US Open Cup game and brought a few fans with them. One of them, our own Kelly Riles (Meridian FC), greeted him with a hearty, "WEE MAAAN!" Our group nearly busted a gut laughing, Richie just smiled and waved. Class act! Best of luck, Wee Man. I'll buy you a pint when I see you on the town. You're the full measure!
Good luck, Richie. You were always one of my favorites, perhaps because I played a similar role when I played (although not nearly as good.) You stopped the attack, took top players out of the game, and most of all, knew how to do what it takes to win. I don't think it's luck or coincidence that Williams won wherever he played. Those that bash Arena for playing him in NATs games probably didn't understand that. I expect to see him as an MLS coach someday, hopefully for DC.
Good luck to a great player whom I've always thought was underrated. Glad to see you back in the Commonwealth Richie. -Digital
It pays better than the MLS Richie was one of the best at what he did, luckily during his best years he did it here. One of my best Rrrrrrrrrrichie memories was a number of years ago in an Open Cup game against NC at UVA. At that stadium you can hear everything the players say and Richie is foul and loud. After a bad Gori pass, you could hear "What the ********** was that Mario???" and then later when one of the NC guys (about 6'1") knocked him over in the middle of the field, Richie turned around got as into his face as he could, then decked the guy - red card, see ya later. We, of course, played inspired after he left and won the game. The guy was all about winning. I'm glad he's still playing, I think he'll do well for the Kickers.
