Former United stalwart Richie Williams has left MLS and signed for Richmond. Thanks for the memories Rrrrrrrrichieeeeeeeeeee!
Thanks for completely shutting down Cienfuegos in MLS Cup 99. My personal favorite Richie moment was during the opener in 1998 against the Fusion (the first game played in the league that year), Richie scored the opening goal. Somebody in the bar said "Ladies and gentlemen, Richie Williams is now the leading scorer in MLS."
Quite frankly I am surprised he did not stay on as an assistant coach with the Metrostars. Good luck to Richie Williams.
Wow. Great news for the A League. The more guys like this they can get, the better the league will become. Wow.
Here's the link to the story. I forgot he played w/ Richmond way back when... http://onthesidelines.org/hindsight022604.htm
Since the Kickers have a PDL team and Super Y League teams, I wonder if he's using their program to head into coaching.
My favorite Richie Williams moment was meeting his mom in the beerline at the Swamp in 2000 (in the game in which United led Metro 2-0 in the 80th minute and still managed to lose in regulation.) She was quite nice, though a bit taller than him frankly, and said Richie always spoke fondly of his time in DC. I wish Richie and the Kickers well. For all his back passes and his uncanny ability to show up at every AU and Maryland game I ever attended, I will always remember him most as one of the essential elements of the best United teams. Good luck Richie. perc
Thanks also for shutting down El Pibe in the '96 playoff run. I thought Valderama was going to blow a fuse; Richie was in his hip pocket the whole game. One of mine is a late-season goal in '97 at the Swamp where he ran toward the rest of the team and was buried. Came up with a nasty rug burn on his forehead. He was quoted as saying he'd learned his lesson: If he ever scored again, he was going to run away from his teammates. Best of luck to the scappiest United player ever to wear the colors. dadman
Won a US Open Cup with them too. MLS may have passed him by, but he has what Alex Ferguson calls the "American winning mentality."
Well, yeah, if you want to count the Canadian baby-faced assasin, well, sure... Still, nobody ever got inside an opponent's skull like ABMOD.
One of the most underrated United players ever. I think it's really cool that some of the older MLS stalwarts are making their way into the A-League now. It's great for the A-League and means that MLS is really improving. Good luck Richie!
i thought richie quite crafty all the way around, its one of the reasons he has had such a great career--he outhinks most guys on the field. and i agree, he sure has a real skill for winding guys up a bit.
Good for Richie. It's good to see some veteran's slide back into the A League on their way into retirement. I hope this means there is a position as a coaching his future. For some odd reason, I always imagined him playing in the Netherlands jersey... and looking like an Oompa Loompa!
This is great. I have been a fan of Richie since the begining and was bummed when we shipped him to those that shall not be mentioned. The best thing about Richie was/is his passion. That passion was always directed in the right direction at the enemy and their ankle have the bite marks to prove it. This gives me the final excuse I needed to get to more Kickers games.
Very much so. I think the 99 MLS Cup was his 10th trophy at all levels. Somewhere online there must be a list of everything he's won, but I don't have time to look for it this second.
Richie is one of the most intense individuals I've ever met. As has been told in this thread, I agree that he was one of the best 'brain surgeons' around. He really got into Pibe's and Cien's crania. Nobody controlled Valderrama better and I don't think Richie ever lost a match-up against Cien. I wish we would have seen more outside shots from Richie because he could boom them in. Now maybe we'll see him become more offensively oriented for Richmond. The Kicker's first two matches are is their US Open Cup series vs Va Beach (I think). Richie should make an immediate impact up and down the middle for the Kickers. I would like to be there when Richie meets Watson (Battery)! You're gonna have to watch your language in Richmond, baybee! Even their die-hard supporters blanche at colorful language. Good luck and good health. Thanks for the memories. GM
Speaking of booming Richie Williams shots, I was just thinking of the Cup Final in '99 when he rattled the woodwork of Kevin Hartman. That was a hell of shot.
We don't play VB until the third week of the season. We open home to Charleston on 4/17 then go down to Blackbaud on the 24th. Richie is probably going to continue is role of annoying bitch on the field, and I'll be happy to see it. We lost basically every central midfielder we had from last season (including Ray Goodlett who retired), so we're gonna need him to shore up the area in front of the defense. Count me as one of the Kickers diehards who couldn't care less about language by the way. The only reason it was an issue before, (and for the record, I couldn't make the game, so this is all from hearing from fans there and from what I've seen here) was that it was an area heavily populated with small children. Richie will have no problem with language, especially considering we already have Mike Burke! Speaking of youngsters, if y'all wanted to get Freddy some extra pro experience, I think we might be willing to take him in for a game or two. Hopefully we can have a late round Open Cup match again this season and give me the problem of wanting both teams to win!
Nah, at his height, he's going to dye his hair, get a fake ID and try and play in the Super Y league. Forgive me, I needed to take one last swipe. Good luck to Richie in the twilight of his career.
