With the high concentration of former, present, and potential Jayhawks on this board, I thought i would perform a public service and show them exactly where they rank locally.

The standings currently are MU 29.5 to KU 8.0. The trophy was presented today in a ceremony in Columbia as KU has no hope of overtaking the mighty Mizzou Tigers. If you wnat to see a winner, go to Columbia...

    :D

If it's not men's basketball, it doesn't really count. :)

so, tigerdork, how did you like seeing that big softball win in person? how about that tennis match?

    2-1 in basketball
    1-0 in football

yet Mizzou didn't really turn its football win into much, and KU turned it's 2/3 basketball wins into the national title game.

go back to tigerboard and slam KU some more while you dream of what ONE FINAL FOUR in your history would feel like.

Again, realize how much of an all around fan of sports Dave is and you'll realize that these statements won't phase him in the least. Not to mention that hes just trying to get a rise out of KU fans.

Notice McGinty *yawned*, and you shot back...

Spoken like a true Beaker. No matter if the rest of the athletic program is a disgrace to a premier sports conference. Mizzou's domination serves to highlight something else. Compare Mizzou with several other teams in the Big XII and they look like KU. That's how bad Beakerville really is right now.

It'a no wonder every cupcake 50-point pre-season mismatch for KU hoop has to be televised...it's the only opportunity for Hawks to squalk.

I'm merely attempting to be a "voice of reason" in a sea of border war conflagration.

And I've never talked smack about my alma mater. Yes, it's that one. :)

Oh yeah? You think Nebraska is only a football power (well except for last year) but they've won national championships in Gymnastics and Bowling!

    So there. :)

I'll come out and say it... as long as our Basketball team is a national power and our Football and Baseball teams are trying to develop, I honestly could care less what the rest of the program is doing. Sure it would be nice to have an athletics program like Texas or Stanford, but c'mon, how many of us (KU fans) would really care about womens tennis if they were a national power? The mizzou fans that make that arguement crack me up, you have to be kidding yourselves. If we are an embarassment to the Big XII then ask anyone outside the country how KU's softball program is doing. There are 3 sports that matter, and the rest are just a bonus for those who actually care (1% of the people at both schools). The true Border War standings should reflect what the fans really care about. The two basketball games are worth 10 points each, the football game is worth 5 points, and each baseball game is worth 1, and that's it. KU wins 20-8 in the "What people actually care about" Border War standings.

Spoken like someone on the short end of the stick. One of the tried and true proven tenents of power is that if you can't get something, distain it as if you didn't want it in the first place.
I was going to let this thread die, but this statement is such a complete and utter pile of crap I had to respond. What an idiotic statement.
    1) You can't reject all other sport you personally don't care about. OK, maybe you can, but don't blanket statement everything. Also, as someone who actually played and helped other teams within this rivalry, I can attest to one fact: The best attended games at either KU or MU are KU/MU games. At any KU v MU event, regardless of popularity, you will see more people, more people wearing colors, more people being more vocal, and a higher level of play from the combatants. Don't tell me people don't care. You may not convienently care, but others definitely do. The only exception is of course when KU rolls over like a b1tch to all the invading fans of other schools like NU or KSU. This isn't a fact to be dismissed as it happens in both football and basketball.
    2) Putting aside the level of wisdom in your statement, we are left with the simply galling revelation that a single basketball game should count twice as much as a football game.

    What?!?

I can't even conceive of the logic behind this. It couldn't be money, as football far and away outweighs basketball on a one-game basis. Even on a seasonal basis the same level team will produce rediculously more revenue in football than basketball. The NCAA tourney only rises to the level of football because of brackets. Once those are toast the interest is too for the majority. It couldn't be national signifigance, football is much more important in national relevance, $, and TV ratings. It couldn't even be a biased scale as I'm certain both 'Hawk and Tiger were instrumental in the creation of the system.
This only leaves the reality of what truly exists in Lawerence and a contributing factor to why KU has such a crappy athletic department: KU fan isn't really dyed in the wool Beaker Blue, just a fair-weather supporter of one lone gender of one lone sport. If it isn't the cagers, who cares? Embarassing. If KU's allumni base had any balls they would collectivly and on a wide spread basis write your worthless President, Board of Regents, and the Governor; demanding with all possible insistence that the entire KU Athletic department get its' head out of its' kiester.
Why should you care? In starting this thread, I was trying to make a point as lightly as a Tiger alum could be expected to do. Bluntly it's this: The state of state universtiy budgets is one that demands a high level of excellence from the athletic department to help drive university enrollment, endowments, national recognition, and everything else that effects the bottom line, read: money. In the end it is money that allows the academic side to prosper. KU athletics isn't a boon to anything. It might not be a paracitic relationship just yet, but it's getting there.

Don't worry about it - MU fans will be happy to continue to kick Beaker butt over the next 20 years while you people wonder why it all went wrong.

Just as you say it's convinient for me and other KU fans to say the all the other sports don't matter and toss them aside, it's convinient for you to act like those are ones that actually matter. What's the truth? It's in the eye of the beholder. I'll believe that you might actually care, but I can asure you many of your alum and rival alum could really care less.

I will gladly give you this border war "trophy" for the next 20 years if we sweep you in basketball every year. Ivan Carter of the KC Star went on a border war tour before the game in columbia this year. Going up and down eastern Kansas/Western Missouri, he interviewed both KU and MU fans who lived along the border. One question he asked those interviewed was if they would rather sweep their rival in basketball, or go to the Final Four. He said it was the wierdest thing that people living so close to each other (in these border towns) had such different mentalities and expectations about this rivalry. KU fans overwhelmingly said they wanted to go to the Final Four, and MU fans overwhelmingly said they wanted to sweep KU.

The expectation every year for KU is at least an Elite 8, but preferably a Final Four, and in the pursuit, Mizzou is merely a stepping stone towards perfection. Football, because it is football matters even though both schools haven't done anything in years. The baseball rivalry is important when taken into context that it is college baseball, which isn't really that popular anyways. Fact is you won't find many KU or MU fans who disafree with me on this when I say the basketball series is the cake, football and baseball is the icing, and the other sports are just sprinkles. You do have a unique perspective in that you care about the other sports, so for that... I say congratulations on the victory. I have no problem saying that because it takes nothing away from me, this border war trophy doesn't matter to me. I checked the stadings only once throughout the year, towards the beginning, and once I saw the criteria, I laughed and never looked at it again.

You can celebrate your trophy, I'll celebrate my sweep.

Um...no it isn't. Scoreboard says MU, but whatever lets you sleep at night.
    Fixed your post. :)

I love how you use the phrase "the criteria". Like using that phrase somehow lends validity to the rediculous notion that the methods used to name a winner are shrouded in some grey area of doubt, are somehow punitive to KU, are completely arbitrary, or are unfair to one enitity over another. How very KU of you...
First, you didn't do anything to help earn it, and I graduated 10 years ago. No sweep, MU won the big one in March. It's still a weak view. Without the occasional good men's BB season, KU would just be completely leaching off the Big XII pie actually earned by others. This is aside from the rest of the Ath. Dept. being a parasitic drain on the overall KU budget.
