As the team prepares for the friendly versus Venezuela, this picture says a lot about how far USMNT soccer has come, in my opinion.

Garcia's image, almost diety-looking in some ways, just demands much more respect than Balboa, Lalas or Agoos's long hair ever did.

Sure we might still have a problem with Landon's current hairstyle, but he's young and can still work on it.

Take away the USSF patch and he looks like he's playing for Italy.

    . . . or for Argentina.

and these are good things. this is what you want to look like when you're playing.

I also think that a nice caption for the photo would be:

    How would Jesus chest trap?

That is what is seperating the US from becoming a great soccer power, our lack of great hair. Pablo had something going but cut it off. Maybe DMB can grow a Doctor J. type fro...

I don't care if they look like this as long as they can play and win matches:

We need a player with a huge afro! What's more American than that?

There really is some sad truth to what you guys are saying.

Our players need some images. Clint tried, but for some reason, a Georgia boy with a mohawk just doesn't work.

I'm all for the DMB fro. I just remember Claudio Reyna being interviewed the night before the Portugal game and he had a simple buzz going on and it worked for him. (It was his sweats that screamed, "I don't really care what's up, but I'm not trying to say something by coming in sweats.")

We need someone with shaved head. A good shaved head. I think maybe Bobby Convey could pull it off.

Back to my original point: image does mean something. We need diversity. People tend to be drawn to teams when they relate to a person's image. (A big deal was made at the beginning of the year because the Mavs have a bunch of clean white guys and they're WINNING. Even Mike Wilbon and Tony Kornheiser pointed out that this team is popular because they win, but not just because they win. They've got this clean look to them that is seldom seen in the NBA and fans are liking it. That and Cuban is God.)

All I have left to say is this: Freddy Adu, blonde dreadlocks.

    I disagree.
I think Cleetus only did the Mohawk in order to do the same thing as other World Cup players. IMHO, Clint should have stayed with the mohawk.

The problem with Clint cut is that he wore gey clothes that completetly made him look like a wannabe. Punk haircuts and Backstreet Boy clothes just dont go together.

Didn't Ed Johson do the Afro thing while playing with the U 17's a couple of years back?

It won't be too many years before Landon has no hair to style, so he ought to do something now before having to resort to the ubiquitous shaved head look.

But, we've had players with "looks" and it didn't help.

It looks better than Agoos's fairy pony tail, but Lalas and Balboa looked bad-ass.

He is cap-tied, piss-poor on defense, and would slow down our offense too much.
