The family has begun our savings for a 10 day trip to Germany for the 2006 WC. For you experienced soccer travelers, what kind of cash would we need in June 06 to pay for airfare, hotels, meals and tickets?

Right now airfare is cheap but dont count on it in 2006... mabey though but i hope a situation doesnt arrive which makes airfare cheaper if you know what i mean But hotels are going to be super expensive because of the WC and everyone trying to get a place. Meals aren't too bad in germany so for ten days i would say mabey 150 bucks a person as long as u dont go to fancy restuarants... stay with deli's
for a 2 weeks stay... $1000 bucks for airfare $1200 bucks for hotel $300 bucks for food $200 for tickets to matches $500 for random junk $300 for train pass $4000 bucks? that seems about right... the hotel will be a lot cheeper when split amongst people...this is just a guess based on someone going it alone. you could rent a car, and split it amongst a group it would be cheeper than going the train route. just remember though, gas is a hell of a lot more expensive (3-4 x's) in europe than here in the states.
I took my family of four (2 adults, 2 teenagers) to Europe in 2000. I planned on about $100/day for food and misc., $100/day lodging, $60/day for rental car and gas. About $750/person for airline tickets. Depending on where you stay, how many people you have, amount of desired freedom and/or desire to navigate the German roads, you will probably choose either rental car or Eurorail pass (or a combination of both). Munich and Berlin make rail travel a good prospect. Small towns are cheaper and increase the value and utility of a rental car.
Thanks. That is good information. My current budget has: 700 for airfare 150 per night hotel (50 per person, 3 going) 65 for food, per person 225 for tickets (75 for each of 3 matches) Now I just need to wait and see which travel method will be better, car or rail, depending on draw.
As someone living in Germany, I think you may need to up the $$ for Hotel. Everyone here is talking about how it's gonna be WICKED expensive for Hotels during the Cup. They'll be gouging (sp?) in any town anywhere near any of the venues. Also, the dollar is droppin' like a stone ---who knows where it'll be in 06' but...I'd plan for the worst and hope for the best. Trains will be much better for you in virtually all the venue cities...even if you stay well outta town to save on Hotel costs...you can still catch commuter trains for very reasonable prices.
While driving on the Autobahn is very appealing, making sure you have the correct car is important. When your car's top speed is about 120 kph (most economy cars), you are stuck in a limbo between trucks driving 80-100 kph and Mercedes and BMW's driving 200 kph. You see one of these fast cars in the rear view - look back at the road - and then look at the rear view to see their grille about to impact your trunk... Rail is quite easy and relatively inexpensive. Plus you can drink to your liver's content and not have to worry about Polizei!
Sure, if you can figure out where in Bremen to get it... If you want to drink real beer, the following are recommended: 1) Jever - Best pilsner in the world! Yes, it is better than those quite excellent Czech pilsners. 2) Astra - Beer sponsor of FC St. Pauli... The real Hamburg beer (in addition to Holsten)! Hey, if the left wing radicals like it, it can't be all bad... 3) Karlsquelle - $0.15 for a .33 liter can. May not taste great (still better than many mass produced American beers) but a whole case will only cost you around $3.60... 4) Maisel's Hefeweissen - Better than Schneider IMNSHO... 5) Basically any local German beer.

in 94 we just mailed in and got tickets - now the perception may be that tickets will be harder to come by for european WC (as opposed to US) but actually the 94 is the most attended WC - tickets shouldnt be a problem - now hotel i am reserving now just IN CASE i am going(which i am unless i die), id advise getting a reservation as soon as you can, but some places might require a healthy deposit (WINK WINK) luckily i am moving to germany this year so i will have it much easier and id take the train pass... really
However the WC in the US had places like the Rose Bowl (~100k) and Giants Stadium (~80k) for some of the games, whereas in Germany I would think that the vast majority of stadiums will be much smaller than those capacities.
