I'm sure I was the only attendee at the Comets' Open House event last night (Tue.). It was similar to the Wizards' one with pizza, drink, a scrimmage, and autographs.

The league has more than a few changes for the better that were readily apparent at the scrimmage. The first thing I noticed was all of the rocket red balls on the field. They brought them back! It's about time. No excuse for not having the orange ball. Lasers and effects ala 80's will be a regular feature of games as well. The league has changed names back to the highly succesful and more appropriate MISL. Dallas and San Diego are back competing as they should be. Also Cleveland changed thier name back to "Force" from "Crunch". (Not a good change in my book). Still, it's a change to original, so maybe it has merit.

In the front office, the Comets have added 15-20 new sponsors. The corporate additions are numerous and known names around town. Also, similar to what Chicago Fire has done, everything connected to the team has been named something associated with the team. The downstairs bar is now called the "Launching Pad". The "Galaxy Gals", and "Spacestation Kemper" are also wrapped into the theme. The final thing I noticed was that every home Comets game will have a marketing theme geared around a fun unique concept. They will also have the weekday day game for students and the New Years Eve early start with party as was custom for the Blades. All in all, they seem to be busting tail over at the Kemper. Still no explanation why the jerseys are all white and all black for a blue and orange team. Thanks Reebok.

On the field, It looks as though KC has stepped up nicely to patch holes in midfied and defense, along with adding depth. With Dino Dilevski, Andinovski, and Wade they looked solid offensively. They ran many effective plays from set pieces, almost all of them worked. Catrell is healthy and should add to the back. GK is still a depth issue as Bowes the #2 is a question mark and #3 is just plain worthless. KC looked very capable of running it up on anyone while being able to spread it out and maintain possession while protecting a lead. They should be tough! In addition to that, it's readily obvious that every Comet is ready and willing to extnd themselves out there to Joe Public, much like Gutierrez.

I'd also have to say that Preki would have a difficult time finding his customary minutes out there with KC. I'd think Preki could find a roster spot until he's 50. I'm saying he would have a tough time with the pace displayed in a scrimmage much less game speed. It was also very striking that most of KC's guys had the same quick touch and quick feet Preki displays occasionally. I'd still rather see Preki play inside, but that's just me.

If you didn't go to a game last season or have a bias against it, you're missing a pretty good night out at a fairly reasonable price. The level is better than you think. The home opener is Sat. Oct 5th v defending champs Milwaukee Wave and the much hated goons, the Dusoski brothers. Hopefully, we'll be busy that day.

I will be in KC for the Milwauklee game on 10/12. Is there any special promo for that night. Last time I went to a Comets game I got a KC Blades hockey puck for some reason.
