We probably could use him as an inexpensive left back if we decide to push Ziadie up in a 4 man back line. Taken from link below: "Former Metro and current Chicago Fire left back Orlando Perez confirmed that the Metros had inquired about trading for him. Talks have stalled but a deal could still take place. The Metros and Fire will scrimmage Saturday. ... News of the collapse of the Giants Stadium practice bubble was met with snickers and laughter from several Metros who make no secret of their disdain for the artificial turf practice field. "That's good news," said one player. "Maybe we can stay down here (in Florida) till the season starts." The MetroStars were slated to use the Giants Stadium bubble as their practice facility until a new outdoor facility was finished in Pequannock in May." http://www.northjersey.com/page.php...lRUV5eTYzNDM5NDQmeXJpcnk3ZjcxN2Y3dnFlZUVFeXk2
Bradley feels his rear burning, getting desperate now, hey we will look at anyone, now ! Orlando Perez might be good enough as a cheep sub.
Considering Bradley traded for Perez to get him to Chicago in the first place, he must like him (as did many Metros supporters who weren't happy with him going to DC in the first place). Sorry to disagree with you, but I'm guessing he has had his eye on Perez for a while, and this isn't a desperation move.
Perez is really a Tony Sanneh type utility player. OK both defensively and offensively, gets up and down pretty well, athletic. Good as a outside back or winger.
I wouldn't go THAT far to compare him to Sanneh, but he would make a good as a sub. in the outside back position. We may need him if our defensive players get shifted around due to injuries and/or national team call ups.
Perez was never that bad... he was looking stronger in my opinion when we were just about to trade him.
I will be on Bradley's case for not making his moves earlier . When spring training starts I would like the metros to have their starters in place and some. I did say Perez is a good sub, there is nothing to disagree about.
Ahhh, blubbering of yet another beknighted yahoo...... Perez is a quality left sided player, whether as a midfielder or a defender. He knows his role, does it well, and yet, people are looking for flashes of brilliance from the man. He's a very good MLS level player and was a revelation for us along the backline in 2001. Certainly, if we add Shepard and Perez, the left side of our team looks complete. Perez has decent speed, nice enough touch, and overlaps and moves up the field quite well. He is a poor man's Diego Gutierrez, and with the salary cap crunch that we're in, that's rather ideal. With that being said, this is the MLS, and how many teams other then LA really have their rosters set? And should the rosters be set after the massive overhaul we needed to endure?
"On his case"... good god. Settle down, chief. You realize that he has been making moves since a couple weeks after being named the coach. You can't do everything at once. The core of our team is together, training in Florida. The season doesn't start for close to eight weeks. Moreover, we've got several trialists in training camp. We're talking two or three players AT MOST who might be traded for or signed who aren't with the team right now-- maybe DiGiamarino, maybe Orlando Perez, maybe somebody else. And learn a little history. We've probably got more of our key players ready to go at the start of camp than we have at any point, ever. How many times have we started the season waiting for our most important guys out for a few months with injuries, on loan with foreign teams, or not having yet completed their transfers?
This is all very true Haig, but I do not consider it to be a good thing, it is just history, and we all know where it got us. One hopes they learn from past mistakes and make changes accordingly.
I think the point that you're missing is that for the first time in a while, we have a strong core going right down the middle of the field, filled with internationals and players who have played at a very high level. In past years, we may have had complete teams, but they were of mediocre and subpar athletes and footballers. And who in their right mind expects Bradley to right the ship in one year? Turning around a team that has been overall subpar for its existance is not a one month, three month or twelve month job. Braldey has done an exceptional job in a short period of time. Now he begins the work of finding compliment players. We're in incredible shape two months away from the season's start, I am very excited about these prospects.
There is no cookie-cutter way to build a team. Would it be best to have everything set today? Of course. But, in MLS, do you have to be completely settled...even when you play your first game? I don't think so. I guarantee we'll see players who start Game 1 who are gone by Game 15. Take a look at the lineup that started for Bradley's first team in Chicago in Game 1 during their championship season in 1998. I count five guys...Andrew Lewis, Jorge Salcedo, Frank Klopas, Rich Kotschau and Tony Kuhn, who weren't starting in MLS Cup. If you followed the Fire at all that year, you may also recall that Roman Kosecki reported to the club the night before the opening game (and started and scored in Game 1) and Jerzy Podbrozny did not make it to Chicago until around Game 4. Neither player trained one second with the club in pre-season. Not saying that's the ideal way to do things, but acting like you're dead in the water if you're team's not set in February is just not true.
Besides isnt 90% of the team already here? We only need 2 wingers. Rosas is not completely signed but he's training, so is Shepperd. Garnero is waiting for us to go to Argentina to train, and everyone else Bradley is looking at are for the bench. So whats the big deal? We got MOST of our team together. Dont get me wrong I would like the whole team to be together NOW, but its far from the old days when 50% of the team was still unknown or comprised of the same old hacks.
I wish I could feel as excited as you. I am just to anxious for the new season to start. April seems so far away for me.
You're able to know that from Montclair? Even better, so what the hell is everyone complaining about then?
I think you guys will get 3 guys to complete your squad, Mario/Garnero, Sheppard/Digiamarino, and Perez. I think Perez would be a very good addition. He looked good with the fire at the end of last season. He has speed, size, a strong shot and is better going forward than Zaidie IMHO. He needs a little refining defensively, but as a left back in a 442 or even left wing in a 352 he should be fine. Bradley is very good at maintaining a solid defense even with less than stellar talent. I'm one of the guys that is expecting a lot out of Bradley's Metros. I also think Perez would love to return to New York, and I would expect Bradley to bring the best out of him. Best of luck getting all of those guys. -Tron
It's not either/or with Mario/Garnero. http://www.northjersey.com/page.php...lRUV5eTYzNDQ4NTkmeXJpcnk3ZjcxN2Y3dnFlZUVFeXk2
