Well, it isn't really travel related, but there wasn't anywhere else to post it. I'm moving to Orlando in 3 weeks because my wife got a job offer that is really important to her career advancement. I know jack all about Orlando other than the fact that it is home to Mickey Mouse and his cohorts and that I'm really going to miss the hills and valleys of varied terra firma. If anybody knows anything cool to do down there or any cool people for that matter, let me know, because it's all new to us.
To be honest it isn't THAT bad. Orlando has everything you will ever need in a city, its a bit small, but has plenty of energy. A good deal is that Tampa, a much more interesting city, is a short afternoon drive down the interstate. Get a season pass to islands of adventure in orlando and to Busch Gardens in Tampa. They are cheap and roller coasters are a great way to get dizzie on a down day. Avoid international drive at all times, but most particularly on the weekends and all nights. Stop by in Deland, a little drive north, for a great Cuban sandwhich place called Belini's (i might have this wrong, I'll figure it out and tell ya later). Or something like that. Best damn sandwiches in Florida. Um... Disney will get old fast, but the outlet malls are always a great bargain. Dolly World just opened, never went, but it looked fun. Orlando City Walk is actually a good time and a season pass would be a good idea if you enjoy taking the lady dancing now and again. Go after 6 p.m. to get free parking. DO NOT miss space shuttle launches if and when they resume. Titusville is not far at all and the view from U.S. 1 just can't be beat, especially at night, when that great rocket turns the night to day. One of the most awe inspiring events I've ever witnessed. A night launch. But you can see it from Orlando pretty well, especially from the top of a tall building. Orlando traffic is terrible and can grind to a standstill for no apparent reason and at any moment, no matter the time or day. Be warned. The Orlando Magic are worth supporting, despite their god aweful season this year. Mcgrady is gone, but its still got to be a good time at the O-rena. I refuse to call it by its official new name. The city beautiful isn't all that bad.
Nico, my brother is a resident at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Women and Children. He lives in Metrowest and really likes it. Also, there's a TGIFridays (also called Front Row) that hosts the Olrando Celtic Supporters Club. Sachin
Worst what? Place to go sledding? I'd trade MI for FLA in a frozen heartbeat. Good luck with the move, Nico. No substantive comments on Orlando except to say that Universal Studio's Islands of Adventure has really good rides.
the worst thing about Nico leaving is I now have nobody to borrow Franco-Algerian folk music cds from. Just kidding bro, I don't think you have any of the aforementioned.
Good luck with the move. My wife and I are moving on Friday. Well, it's down the street three blocks, left turn, third house on the left, but still... (okay, it's nowhere near Alabama to Florida). My Sister-in-Law lives in Winter Park with her husband and two kids. My wife always wants to visit, but I usually talk her out of it. Please find the good soccer bars, bookstores, and coffeehouses for the day I finally lose the discussion! And once again, safe travels.
Maybe if you hate the heat and nice weather.... I have been in the north east for my entire life, and getting sick of the overall congestion (too many mice in the cage), and I hate the cold. The "change of seasons" novelty that so many speak of, means jack to me.. I am thinking of FLorida or Dallas..
True, For me Cali would be an obvious choice (sans L.A.), but I work the stock market which would require me to be at the office at 5:30 AM
yeah, I have heard that arguement many times. For some it is true, but I dont value the afternoons off that much. Plus getting up that early is much worse. Especially from a social stanpoint. Dating/going out with friends would be butal.. HAving to go to bed at 9:00 on a weeknight, etc...
