Is this what MLS has done in the past as far as opening day or are planning to provided their teams dominate the USOC? If so I think it is a great idea for a curtain raiser to the new season.
I notices this befor, but didnt start a thread. We know England has the Community Shield game to start the new season. If we are only going to have three games on ABC a year, then this game is a good one to broadcast. This should become a tradition each year. The question should be should this game be a game like the Community Shield, a game outside the regular season with a title and trophy? I happy with just having the two teams in question play the season opener the next year. But what will happen when a team outside MLS wins the USOC?
they might have done it before... but not last year last year it was chicago vs columbus and next year, i figure they open up in columbus of l.a. (so one of them had best win something this year) they want to highlight those two facilities as much as possible
I'd suggest having a rematch of the MLS Cup final, or perhaps the Supporter's Shield winner v the MLS Cup winner (assuming those teams are different). Odds are this wouldn't have to happen too much though, only one A-League team has won the cup in the 7 years MLS teams have been competing. In regards to this year, though, I've referred to the match as the "SuperCup," ala Serie A. I think it's a great idea to make it a tradition- and perhaps the V-Army and the LA Riot Squad could organize a small trophy to present to the winning team...
American Super Cup US Super Cup America's Super Cup Champions' Super Cup Super Classic Cup or Copa Superclasic'o' MLS Super Cup
What ever we call it, should the game be 1. A game apart form the regular season with a trophy and an offical "honor" ala the European examples? or 2. Just the first game of the regular season?
I don't think a cup is necessary for this game. I think it should be tradition to have the teams play the first game of the season on national TV. Doesn't the NFL always have the defending Super Bowl champ host the first Monday night game of the year?
No. I like the way MLS is doing this. Giving the 2 Cup winners some national exposure. At this point, having it be an exhbition game would be a waste. Regular season game 1 is fine. I hope they do this again next year. And whatever Ty Keough calls the game will be just fine with me.
