So does the Coliseum. USC has spent a crap ton of money updating it over the last year or so with new seats, anti-slip surfaces, railings, new press boxes, new tech infrastructure (wifi, large in-stadium screens, etc), luxury boxes, club level, etc. Not sure why that wouldn't be the choice venue for the WC. By the time it rolls around Expo Park is going to be pretty well built up with the Lucas Museum, New Air and Space center for the CA Science Museum, Whatever the LAFC stadium will be called. I have nothing against the Rose Bowl but getting in and out of Expo Park is much easier.
That sucks. That's some real dumbassery by US Soccer. Maybe it will change but I'm guess the Rams stadium with grass on top is what they will do.
I'd imagine the final will be in new York (jersey) and the rose bowl will host a semi. A quarter final or group stage for sofi.
Is this is the US/Mex/Canada joint WC? If so do you think they would have two venues in the same city?
In fact, for now ONLY the Rose Bowl is on the list from L.A. County. The reason for that is that US Soccer wanted to avoid having stadiums that aren't yet constructed so that FIFA wouldn't think that Sofi Stadium is being built for the World Cup. The idea was very high profitability - no construction at all. Now that Sofi is already open, perhaps they will make changes to get the stadium some games. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2026_FIFA_World_Cup Proposed venues listed here. EDIT: Looks like Sofi is definitely trying to get into the mix. Coliseum still not involved. https://www.lagalaxy.com/post/2021/...orkshops-bid-host-2026-fifa-world-cup-matches I think the reason the Coliseum doesn't get big soccer matches is that even after renovations, it's still a track and field stadium, with one of the ends being round. It means some fans have seats facing away from the field, any many fans are very far from the field.
That's a good point. If they do have matches at the Rose Bowl a dedicated bus lane to and from Memorial Station has to happen. Traffic is terrible getting into and out of the Seco.
So some MLS teams will play 3 games and some will play 2? On the one hand, grabbing 3 points from 2 games will obviously yield you a higher PPG than getting 4 points from 3 games, and similarly, 4 points from 2 games is better than 5 points from 3. But on the other hand, playing a third game obviously gives you a third chance to pick up a win. ATL - @ORL, CHI, @NE AUS - @LAFC, @COL, @MIN CHI - NE, @ATL, @ RBNY CIN - @NSH, @ NYC, @ORL COL - @DAL, AUS, @VAN CLB - PHI, @MON DAL - COL, @SJ, POR DC - NYC, @NE, @SJ HOU - SJ, @POR, LAFC LAFC - AUS, SEA, @HOU LAG - @MIA, NYRB, @SEA MIA - LAG, @PHI, @NSH MIN - @SEA, RSL, AUS NSH - CIN, MON, MIA NE - @CHI, DC, ATL NYC - @ DC, CIN, @PHI NYRB - SKC, @LAG, CHI ORL - ATL, @SKC, CIN PHI - @CLB, MIA, NYC POR - @VAN, HOU, @DAL RSL - @MIN, SKC SJ - @HOU, DAL, DC SEA - MIN, @LAFC, LAG SKC - @ RBNY, ORL, @RSL Nashville seemingly with the easiest path. Austin and Cincinnati obviously with the hardest paths. Philadelphia is the one and only team that has to play defending MLS Cup champ Crew. (While two other teams will join the Crew in having to play the defending Supporters Shield winning Union.) Toronto will have no effect whatsoever, as they're the third team after RSL and the Crew to have a bye week, and their only two opponents are fellow Canadians.
I can confirm that SoFi is being considered along with the Rose Bowl. Would they use both in this world cup? I have no idea. As much as I hate grass on top of turf I think FIFA will go with SoFi for all the money making suites etc. that it offers. One can only hope for a World Cup they'd spend some time and money to get the grass right somehow on top of the turf.
BREAKING: I'm being told the 2021 US Open Cup will be cancelled, with a chance of rescheduling later in the year. The 106 year tradition ended in 2020 due to COVID-19. In March, @ussoccer announced a 24 team format, which was then shortened to 16 teams last month. #USOC2021— Phillip Grooms 🌊⚜️ (@phillgrooms) April 16, 2021 Not sure if this is true but thought I'd share.
BREAKING: As 1st reported by @phillgrooms, https://t.co/gnkdW6Yf1h has confirmed the 2021 #USOpenCup will NOT be held in the spring of 2021. The hope is to hold the tourney later this year. Then, plan on a full-blown #USOC2022, which begins qualifying in the fall. #USOC2021 pic.twitter.com/2vXun4pZAQ— TheCup.us (@usopencup) April 16, 2021 maybe just later and actually better?
The official decision announcement was scheduled for April 19 so this is not a surprising leak as far as timing.
Later makes all the sense in the world. 1) Hopefully COVID situation will be better. Vaccinations continue at 3+ million per day despite the J&J snag. Pfizer & Moderna close to EUA for 12 year olds and up. Novavax close to EUA. By Memorial Day, another 100 million+ will have shots. 2) It would allow more teams in. Open the preliminary rounds back up. Play them late May & June while MLS on break.
I totally agree that later is better. The only potential snag is if it gets scheduled so much later that the amateur teams' season end before one or more open cup rounds they would normally participate in... Since the Tweets talked about fall, that sounds like what be happening. But if we can get every single pro team involved again, that's probably an okay trade-off.
If the 2021 U.S. Open Cup had not been postponed/cancelled this would have been the MLS field: 1. RSL 3.00 PPG 2. SEA 2.33 3. NER 2.33 4. NYC 2.00 5. SJE 2.00 6. AUS 2.00 7. LAG 2.00 8. ORL 1.67 ------------------ 9. MTL 1.67 10. LAX 1.67 11. FCD 1.33 12. ATL 1.33 13. MIA 1.33 14. HOU 1.33 15. VAN 1.33 16. SKC 1.33 17. COR 1.33 LAFC would have lost out to Orlando on goal difference. If nothing had changed.
I don't think Canada ever finished the 2020 Championship but they are going to have the 2021 Canadian Championship. https://www.canadasoccer.com/news/c...21-canadian-championship-format-and-schedule/ Preliminary Round Sunday, August 15 (CPL) FC Edmonton v.
