Gooch makes his debut in the second half of a League Cup match for Metz.

Late in the second half, Metz up 1-0.

No idea yet when he came in.

Finally!!! Let me repeat... he will be the best offensive defender you'll ever see in our current pool of defenders.

I think most of us agree, however it was hard for us to say that when he was playing at Clemson.

Gooch came into the game 50 minutes in.

Looks like he had a chance late.
Metz souffrait, mais s'offrait encore deux occasions par Proment (84) et Onyewu (89). Leur double échec ne remettait cependant pas en cause l'essentiel, la qualification.

buff, yahoo world soccer has metz in 4th position in the second division. don't know if that is accurate, but

what chance does gooch have of playing in d1 next season?,

how many teams do the french promote from d2?, and

does metz have their financial house in order to be able to take that step?

Gooch part of two good chances

    http://www.fcmetz.com/news_detail.asp?num=1577

The game summary from the Metz site has Gooch involved in two chances.

Proment takes a plunging header from a service from Oguchi Onyewu (83rd) which goes a bit to the side of Roux's goal. The american international tries a log on the Bordeau keeper who was out of the box but the ball missed high. (88th)

    Ooops

...uh, make that a "lob", not a "log".

Last year, four went up--believe its down to three this season.

And it seems that Metz is ok financially, for now--whether they could promote, honestly I have no idea.

he is yet to play a professional game. So you must be basing this on what? Play against amateurs? Shall we wait to see how it goes in professional soccer?

    In the article on www.topdrawersoccer.com
Glenn Myernick called him the team's most consistent performer against the likes of Sporting Lisbon (strong side) and Benfica (reserve side). He seemed to think Gooch was going to get into this game when he left the U.S. camp, and sure enough...

Very glad to see this development, let's hope for much more of it.

talked to gooch tonight...he said he played well and was excited to finally play...he feels that he'll be playing more as the season goes on.

    he was really excited though!

    thanks.

the fact that Metz has something of a history with Americans (Regis being a fixture there for awhile) should help. France being a tough place for a young American to proove his worth given the not always favorable attitude towards Yanks. Wouldn't say anti-American but depending who you deal with, you could face certain "cultural biases" which make the road a little bit tougher to hoe. Not saying that's the case here, Onyewu looks to have the goods regardless.

He was impressive in his debut and the fans have been excited about him since the summer. The chance he missed in the 89' was a lob onto an open goal. How cool would that have been?

    Metz message boards

The Metz fans enjoy him enough to have a discussion on their boards trying to come up with a good nickname for him. Some of the suggestions so far:

    The Catapult
    Iron Man
    Big O
    Double O

From the Metz site Q&A a question and answer with the Manager Jean Fernandez (J.F.) If anybody wants to do a better translation go right ahead, my French is not too good and Babelfish doesn’t help much.

Onyewu was in Portugal with the U-23’s? Given the difficulties with his contract and the delays as well as his off time with the the U-23 Nats, Onyewu has played 2 professional games and Metz is still very interested in playing him. They must see a lot of potential in him.

Gooch signing with Metz was more a function of trying to see early playing time IMHO. He could have signed with a lot of bigger clubs.

  22. Because Regis is the All-American boy, right? Man, if the French don't like Americans that's one thing, but I'd hate to think Regis was influencing the matter.

Another nickname suggested was "Le Calamar"

    "The Squid"
