According to L'Equipe. Patellar tendon in knee. If surgery is done, which is expected, out 6-12 months. Expected to see a surgeon in the next few days. http://www.lequipe.com/Football/20030429_175537Dev.html
I tore my patella tendon 17 years ago. I have not played a single game after that. I hope Onyewu fares a lot better than me!!
This kid has no luck. This also puts a severe damper on his Olympic chances and opens up a big hole on the U23 team at right back.
The Metz version is somewhat less alarmist than the l'Equipe version. Both say that he COULD have surgery. The Metz version says that he will first care for his tendon "before looking at other options" and does not mention meeting with a surgeon. Who knows?
There goes his speed... that's one of the worst injuries. When you come back, there's always the shot that it could happen again more so to the other knee. That's too bad.
It's about like an ACL IMHO. Not insurmountable, but working your ass off in rehab has to be a huge priority. I wonder how much jetting back and forth between France and Clemson has to do with this, if any.
You're right. I don't know though if the travel would have done it - maybe the different training regiments could have put different stress on it. Different playing surfaces, different pressure points and drills, etc. One thing he does have on his side is his age - if he was in his 30's, then he might be in bigger trouble. Hopefully he can get back into regular form and gradually build up.
http://www.ussocceruk.com/modules.p...e=article&sid=260&mode=thread&order=0&thold=0 Quotes from the man himself (in English yet!) that all he did was go for an MRI and before he got the results he saw the story that he needed surgery. Instead... “But, I feel fine. I did a few days of no training and minor rehab, ice and massage, and I will start training again today.
Glad to hear it's not worst case scenario. On the other hand, everytime I've watched him play I noticed him wearing a knee brace. Perhaps his body is destined for constant knee injuries?
Was it his same knee that had the injury as the brace? I have before said that wearing a brace consistently is more suggestive of a weakness in the knee than anything else. The additional support from a brace or sleeve actually leads to a weakening of the supporting muscles around the knee. The best way to stabilize the knee is to strengthen those muscles through training or weightlifting. If this is an indication of a predisposition towards knee problems then Oneywu can look forward to a career full of them. Soccer isn't the kind of sport where you can avoid putting stress on knees, leg muscles, ankles, bones, etc. Still it may be nothing more than a tempest in a teacup. The most notable thing about the incident is how the French media so quickly blew it out of proportion. Guess maybe there is some interest in the big fella over there.
I wonder if Oguchi has just gotten too big for his body. He's always been a big and powerful guy but in the SA article that did a profile of him and Alex Yi, it said that Oguchi as up to 6-4 and 212. Man, there are defensive backs - in American football! - who aren't that big. Perhaps he needs to drop about 20 pounds just so he doesn't have to carry so much weight and thus put stress on his body. To be clear, I'm not saying he's fat, just that he's gotten so bulked up, that he's carrying around too much muscle.... ya know, kinda like me and a lot of others on BS!
Besides, the medicine in this area has improved dramatically over the past ten years or so. People are going to be pointing at Willis McGahee as the new gold standard for ACL/MCL tears. Obviously, the patella tendon is not the same, but it is related. He has a young body and the best medicine at his disposal. I think he'll be fine. Claudio had an awful ACL tear at a young age, and he rebounded to have an impressive career, despite all the injuries.
Wish somone would get McGahee's trainer working with Mathis and Wolff..... Armas purportedly worked out with Cobi this past off-season in LA with a group that has put together exercises strictly for the prevention of ACL/knee injuries and an intensive rehab program for people coming off knee injuries. If they do indeed help, I'd say we need to get those guys to do some sessions with USSF/MLS quickly. We have a bad history of our most talented players having knee injuries...
comes from Bergin's site should always be a disclaimer. Had a quote from Oguchi back in the beginning of December when he hurt himself last time, proclaiming himself fit and the reports that he'd be out 3-6 weeks were greatly exagerrated. He didn't play again until January 4th (a great performance btw, then went to Clemson to take a test and never made it back to the starting 11 -once maybe). Around 5 weeks later. Hmmm.
Gooch's (youthful?) over-optimism is Chris Bergin's fault? I would put more stock in a direct quote from a player than an unsourced story such as l'Equipe's.
That's not what my point was. When his injury was reported last time, it was said that he'd be out 3-6 weeks, (by me at soccertimes, as well as elsewhere). My source was the doctor at the club. Bergin's headline was "Gooch Injury Denied" only to have him be out for almost the full 6 weeks. I don't think he ever came out and said: "I reported wrong on that one." His stories are almost always that way. Now, we have Metz's own website (pretty good source?) saying that he may be out 6-10 months and he's saying he's going to practice and play this weekend? (He didn't practice this morning). Maybe he will. It just seems hard to believe however that he has had a knee incident that warranted an MRI, and he's going to risk it by practicing and playing in a reserve match.
You should know that facts have no place on BigSoccer. I knew that "almost always" would get me in trouble, but the guy has a reputation for it. I saw the first name on the page and thought he wrote all of them. Anyway...Gooch is hurt, reports on how bad it is are conflicting.
The request was to name one of "His stories are almost always that way." In fact, seen as you can't and have changed it to "has a reputation"/not backed up, may I suggest you mail him (e-mail address on the top of the site) with your concerns instead of the cowardly posting of unsubstantiated comments and slighting on here? Your concern seems to be with Price, so maybe you have to go through Chris to raise your concerns that you are copying off the official site and Price is interviewing the player in question.
If you want to throw around things like cowardly, etc...(a) maybe you shouldn't do it from behind a screen name, and (b) you should probably just PM me if it's so offensive to you that you have to use insults. PS: I talked to someone at the club today. No copying here.
Yes, my appologies, I should PM you, but it would have been incorrect to allow an incorrect post stand like on this thread. I've looked and Robert Price's name is on all the French stuff, not Chris Bergin. (second time I've told you this). I'm sure if this upset you so much to post on a message board where the writer Price couldn't defend himself against your claim, that it would have been prudent to mail the writer who wrote this. I take it you didn't. (Third time) The request was to name one of "His stories are almost always that way." Please PM me should you find one, one day as I'm not seeing the fairness in making false allegations. I will be happy to talk to you on PM and direct you to contact details for that site. As I'm sure the people here would like to get back to discussing the player in question, rather than an upset French-based writer.
