Germany wins 4-1 but according to the moderator of the BigSoccer Canada forum, Onstad played very well. https://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=52526 News article from Canadasoccer.com: http://www.canadasoccer.com/eng/media/viewArtical.asp?Press_ID=1248
I thought he had a good game. He did well in the air (punching balls) and made a few solid saves. Unfortunately his defence did almost nothing to help him. He seems to have more confidence since he joined San Jose.
Re: Re: Onstad v. Germany [R] Haha, well that should be gone when he plays in front of the defense we'll be putting on the field against Columbus! Let's see, Dayak out....Robinson hurt....Agoos hurting.....Waibel hurting (did anyone else catch the part about Craig missing the USMNT scrimmage because of a calf problem?).....maybe we should beg MLS to allow us to give Barrett and Ibsen a testimonial game this weekend! BTW, Conrad looks like the best defender on KC (maybe because I hate Garcia so much!).
Canadian-Supporter knows more about keeping than I do, so I defer to his knowledge, but I'll add my two bits. It was about what I expected. A lot of punches on corners, one bobble (and it was well hit, but Pizzolitto did well to deal with the loose ball). None of the goal were his fault, but we've had keepers on their day who would have stopped a couple of them. It would have taken a great reaction save, but they went under him or just by him. Not his fault on any of the goals though, by any means. He did make himself big on a couple of clear shots from in close and made great saves to spare our blushes a little. He looked better than the last time I saw him. I've never seen him look so crushed allowing a goal as he did on the first one though. It's hard to describe, but once the ball went past him (he was in mid-air) he kind of froze in position for a second and stayed like that until he hit the ground. His arms, face and legs didn't move. The German TV showed it a couple of times. I guess we were all dreaming of going into the half 1-0 up. The Germans still got whistled off the pitch which was a nice in schaddenfreud kind of way. cheers, hobbes
Re: Re: Re: Onstad v. Germany [R] Despite his own goal v. NE on Saturday, I agree with you. Conrad has "matured", to use a cliched phrase - very tough in the air, much better with his feet, good man-marker - and has really added to the Wizards on the field. Add that to what he brings off the field and in the locker room (did you read that piece in the KC Star last week about how Conrad's humor and personality were the "glue" to the squad already?), Conrad has been a steal for the Wizards and much-missed by the Quakes. Sorry to get off topic. Glad to hear Onstad had a good game in a losing cause. Hopefully he'll come back rarin' to go for SJ, especially after what I considered to be a totally dismal performance by Conway last Sat.
He was stranded on the own goal. He doesn't touch it, Twellman bags #7 on the year (Meola didn't play the ball well at all). He had to lunge just to get a piece of it and therefore didn't have a lot of ability to direct wide of the post. I suppose you could make criticism that his lack of speed kept him from getting there quicker.
Kicker gives Onstad a 2.5 rating, the highest of any Canadian on the pitch and I think third highest of anyone on the day (Bobic was MOTM with a 2). cheers, hobbes
Re-directing the thread again, I agree with the positive posts on Conrad. He's been a terrific player for KC, and the own goal was only bad luck. Meola should have done a better job to take command of the play, either by coming out hard early to get that cross or staying back, instead of getting caught off the line by a bad deflection. Conrad has been designated as the top man-marker, taking on Ruiz and other forwards in the leage. Ganslers got it right, playing him in the middle. We could sure use him now, huh?
From the highlights I saw, Onstad didn't get much help from his backline...the Germans appeared to be shredding it at will. Thank God for our back-9 (injury-adjusted)!
Hard to consider given the fact that Canada had basically a "walking wounded" roster. Some of the players on the bench were nursing injuries.
