Onstad (as expected) has been called up to the Canadian national team for the game against Germany (in Wolfsburg --- June 1st). http://www.canadasoccer.com/eng/media/viewArtical.asp?Press_ID=1222 Onstad 'should' get a lot of work in the game because we are sending over a rather depleted roster.
Hang on... is Yallop letting Onstad play in a friendly the same weekend the Quakes have a game against Chicago??? Considering that Yallop is a loyal Canuck, he just might.
What about Johnny's ankle? Do you reckon he'd be able to play on it for the full 90...or god forbid, full 100 against Chi-town?
Doesn't bother me much. Onstad's gonna see a lot more action against Germany than he would against the Fire. Should be good experience for him. Conway played the full Stanford scrimmage--albeit without much action. I suspect he's soon ready for match play.
Well lets be honest here, we are talking about keepers. If he can push off on the ankle without pain, then he can go a full 90. Only thing to worry about would be how sharp he is, but if Yallop is comfortable with Conway, Im not worried.
Here may be your answer: [q] Excerpt from www.sjearthquakes.com conversation with Frank Yallop Q: Eddie Robinson, Ian Russell and Jon Conway all played their first extended action of the season against Stanford, how are they progressing as they recover from injuries? FY: They are all coming along fine. It is never easy for Jon because he is coming back from a break, (Conway broke his right ankle in March) so he is trying to get his quickness back and see how much he can do on it, but he did well to go 90 minutes against Stanford. He has been training with us and will probably give us about 45 minutes against the U.S. team. I’m not going to have him play in Seattle because that is turf up there, but then he will practice next week and be ready to go that Saturday. [May 31 vs. Chicago at Spartan Stadium][/q]
I think he means that chances are he wont have too many SOG against Chicago, but Canada's poor keeper is going to get shelled in the friendly.
That used to be the case, but hasn't been lately. I think our coach has come to appreciate MLS quality more over the past couple of years. The turning point may have been when De Rosario was finally allowed to start a match in early 2002 & proved to be a better striker than some of the mid-level European-based strikers we were using. De Rosario has been a first choice starter ever since - until his unfortunate series of injuries this year.
