Yea. They're playing some very attractice soccer. Agudelo was on fire. That's sad if true. Chelis has this team playing wtih 'garra'... and they deserve better.
I'm posting this in two completely different threads, but it fits. My mom follows United. She probably knows the roster better than I do and often visits dcunited.com. She didn't realize there was a game on NBCSN on Saturday and was surprised Saturday night when she picked me out during highlights on the local news. She also hasn't received any recent communications from the team. Of course there is no local television deal (people like talking about Chivas USA) and I haven't seen any promotions recently.
2 of the players (I think Mexicans) ran to Chelis and hugged him after scoring. Says something about how Chivas USA players think of him
I can't believe I'm saying this, but I may actually find myself pulling for this team. They're the ultimate outcasts. Rejected by fans, ignored by the media, neglected by their owners, what else is there to do but win, because "f*** it"? If they actually have a successful season, it'll be the kind of thing movies are made of. Wait a minute. I've seen the movie. "Major League". ------RM
As long as we're talking stereotypes, what do people mean by "Latin-style play" and what do they mean by "English-style Route 1" ? Many Mexican teams seem to feature a lot of long, direct passes to forwards speedy enough to get in behind the D while skilled enough to bring down these balls with great first touches which leave them in a position to take on the keeper. When people talk English-style Route 1, it's nearly always in a pejorative sense. So I figure they're talking aerials to bruising, tall center forwards who are trying to play the ball with headers.
I've always interpreted "Route 1" as "hoof it up the center of the field to your big guy as soon as you can". ------RM
There are long balls and there are long balls. What I see a lot from Mexican teams is long diagonal balls behind the defense. What I see from Chivas is aerial balls to players who are directly challenging defenders for the ball. Agudelo may have brought down two long balls with great first touches, but that's not the main feature of the play: he was also physically holding off defenders. The forwards aren't making runs in behind the defense for those long balls, they're playing the bruising center forward role. See also the second and third goals vs. Dallas.
Here's a crazy stat. Chivas USA leads goals for with 8 so far. Yeah, early in the season but with 6 goals against, Chivas USA brings the entertainment?
Chivas USA may have scored the most total but they have played four games. They are still tied with LA and Houston at 2.00 goals scored per game.
I heard Montreal was playing great too. Ah Garber must be having nightmares of a Montreal-Chivas MLS cup
I actually think having a Canadian team win MLS Cup would be welcomed by the league. A lot of the Canadian soccer fanbase is still untapped due to their preference of all things Euro (especially in French Canada), and hockey (which won't change, but the sports are somewhat similar so I'm sure some fans would split time with watching MLS). CUSA, of course, would be a disaster for him I'd think.
In light of this, MLS will soon announce a new playoff format where reigning champions host and get a bye to the MLS Cup. Details to be thrashed out at the AEG annual employee picnic.
Sure it is, smart one. They put a good product out on the field, but have an absent owner, a literal $0 marketing budget, and a fan base consisting of an ultras section (who deserve better) and just about no one else. Use your head.
Nothing I guess. But the Dynamo don't have local ownership and their attendance is way down. Maybe their marketing budget sucks too. How about Dallas, Columbus and Chicago? Are they kicking the Goats ass? I know why you hate the renters, but I don't like why non Galaxy fans are piling on. I think Chellis is the best thing to happen to the bland ass MLS since Blanco left. I went to BBVA on Saturday night and the only other game I had any other interest in watching this weekend was Chivas. I hope they keep it up.
In general, they're certainly doing better by most relevant metrics. And over the last few seasons, on average, yeah. Chicago may have some problems, but we'll see. At least all of those teams have their own stadiums and show some signs of owners who are willing to find ways for the team to (1) make money and (2) compete successfully. I can't speak for everybody who's piling on, but a lot of people are piling on because if Chelis succeeds with this team this season, it will be despite Vergara's decision to treat CUSA like a farm team for the club he actually cares about. And I don't think you get why I'm frustrated with CUSA and Vergara. First, I want the league to succeed, which means that I want owners who want to win. And right now, even Kraft is showing that more than Vergara. And, second, I want CUSA to be an actual rival. When it's their home game, I want the stadium to be full of CUSA fans who are hangdog because we're beating them. It's no fun watching a stadium full of tarps weep.
I gotta say, I sometimes wonder if Galaxy fans making comments about CUSA is just personal - you know, too close to home. It's like me talking about Portland. I can't put aside my distaste for that place after spending my teenage years there. I wonder if everything a Galaxy backer says about CUSA ought to be just throw out as "rivalry talk." Thoughts?
As soon as you show how "rivalry talk" explains why Vergara spends nothing on advertising CUSA, says to the press that CUSA is CdeG's little brother, and why attendance numbers are as low as hey are, then sure.
