Ok, so this is usually how I compare seasons early on... I look at the results so far this season and then look at the same games last season - although the promoted teams make it a bit of a problem - but try this 07/08 06/07 Sund (a) L 0-1 Sheff Utd (a) L 1-2 Eve (h) L 1-3 Eve (h) L 0-2 Derby (h) W 4-0 Watford (h) - w 3-1 Man U (a) L 0-1 Man U (a) - L 0-1 Fulham (a) D 3-3 Fulham (a) - D 1-1 So for both seasons for the same fixtures we have the following record W1 D1 L3. With a 0 GD so far this season (F 8 A 8) but last season with the same fixtures we had a -2 GD ( F 5 A 7) So we are no worse off than last season in theory, but then we have not really imporved much either - although our overall performances are better if you ask me.
Well last year at this stage the results were: Bolton 2 - 0 Tottenham Tottenham 2 - 0 Sheffield United Tottenham 0 - 2 Everton Man United 1 - 0 Tottenham Tottenham 0 - 0 Fulham So it is pretty much the same anyway without swapping teams out.
The only problem is last year's early performances were terrible and matching them is hardly the yardstick to success.
one may rightly contend, however, that while the results are comparable, the performances are less so. tactical cock-up v fulham aside, we look a much better team right now than we did at this point last year. this season, we started off with two very subpar games, and have looked (for the most part) pretty sharp since - results notwithstanding. last year at this time, things were looking pretty desparate. i still like this team. and despite the early points that we've tossed away (i'm as pissed about them as the next yiddo), i'm rather optimistic about what 07-08 can bring. there's a long way to go, yet.
But you won't finish top 4 this season. The big 4 are going to be even further away this season. I have worked out you need to aim for 69 points by doing this: - the double over the bottom 5 - win and draw against the next 5 - win and loss against the top half teams - draw and loss against big 4. and that's all you need to get 69 points which would have been enough to be top 4 in most of the recent seasons except 2002. And at least that would be progress as you would get more points than you have in previous seasons, but this season I think 69 points might not be enough to finish top 4. - Sunderland and Fulham will probably finish bottom 5 (along with Derby, Birmingham and possibly Wigan) so no points should be dropped against these teams. - Everton will probably be in the 6-10 category, however you are allowed a win and a loss and might beat them away, like you did last season. - Man Utd are big 4 so one loss is allowed but you must draw the home game against them. Of course any time you drop points you shouldn't against these teams you must make it up by getting them against a team you were not supposed to get so many against. Last season for example Tottenham did the double over Man City and West Ham (although West Ham were bottom 5). Those teams have improved this season and doing the double over them might not be so easy, but Spurs must go out there with the attitude to beat these teams (as with all the games. I'm not suggesting you plan to lose any, just looking at what you need to do to get to 69 points. So far you have probably dropped 5 points and picked up none towards the target).
I think you make a good point, apart from the first two games we look pretty good. We have been desperately unlucky with a few calls and some fluke shots, but we have to turn good performances into results now.
LMAO the real problem for spurs are the central midfielders. i mean huddleston, jeanas, zakora?? c'mon if u wanna be a top 4 club u need good central midfielders. and no offence to those guys but they cant fill the expectations. everyone talks about the defence. but chimbonda even though he is super crap at man marking he is a very good defender. dawson, kaboul and king all are class. lee is showing to be very good this year after his injury. as for the wideman lennon and bale (who i rate as a winger now), they are gonna be brilliant. and lol with robbie keane, berb, bent, and defoe as strikers. everything looks good except the center of midfield....i think tottenham should beef it up during christmas and get a new keeper. ------------------(NEW)-------------------- Chimbonda----Kaboul-----Dawson-----Lee Lennon------(New)-------(New)------Bale -----------Berbatov-------Keane-------- personally if it turns out like that i would be scared if i was a arsenal fan
Nice post Kingdom. I agree with both Kingdom and BigSkizz that we're about where we were last season as far as our approach to getting a CL spot. And remembering that it was only in the second half of the season that we really got healthy, gelled, and started firing on all cylinders, so we've still got a chance. The Good: Well we appear to be starting to gel offensively a lot sooner than last season. Our problems are in defense where we have both central defenders out and just recently got our left backs healthy. We lost to Sunderland in the most unlucky of timing. But honestly, we sucked and didn't deserve to win that one. Everton got some luck and that was probably the difference. Fulham got a lot of luck in Smertin's freakish deflection and a shot that Kamara probably will not be able to duplicate the rest of the season. So, I'd say our form is actually far better than last season, and we're still enduring significant injuries. The Bad: Last season we had a reason to be so bad. We had about 6 new starters. Most of them were new to the Premiership and England as well, so there's bound to be a huge lack of chemistry at first, and there was. But this season we're playing people who shouldn't have that problem. Bent is new to Spurs, but not the Prem or England. Bale is new to Spurs and the Prem, but not England. Kaboul is the only one who is truly knew to it all, and he's been splendid. Everyone else should be settled and have started developing chemistry for a season now. The Ugly: Last season we had about as good of luck as we could have possibly hoped with the horrible start suffered by both Arsenal and Liverpool. They're both flying now. Arsenal had to adjust to a new stadium, and despite what anyone says, every club suffers at home under that circumstance. Now Arsenal are used to it. Arsenal's young players are maturing and guys like Rosicky and Hleb have fully settled in. Sagna looks solid. They're healthy. Arsenal are definitely taking advantage of our bad start. Liverpool reloaded like no other year they've had in recent memory. They added what they lacked, a top notch forward and winger. They look more like challenging for the title than dropping out of a CL spot. Chelsea look solid and started strong. The only club faltering is Manchester United, and you know they're not dropping out of the top 4. So, despite the strengthening of the Prem's mid-table, the former top 4 clubs show no signs of stumbling. And worst of all, our Board is so out of touch with the game that they're itching to fire the best coach they've had in a very long time. -Digital
