Johnsen was a fantastic defender, if the Swede is anywhere near as composed and good at defending as the Norwegian without injuries, we have struck gold mine. Blanc was awesome in Serie A and washed up when he arrived here, more a sweeper than a CB imo. He is one of the great defenders of the 90 era.
Yup. SAF had been chasing Blanc for years. He was an exceptional game-reader and a fine distributor of the ball. As Syed said though, he was shot by the time we eventually got hold of him - it was just a personal thing for SAF really, on the off chance he'd be able to give us a good year. But by the time he got to us walking pace was all he had left. Ronny Johnsen was one of my favourite Utd defenders. He was often played as a DM owing to his ball skills, the fact he wasn't quite as formidable a physical presence as CBs in England tend to be, and obviously because he was in and out of the side. I just checked out his Wiki - apparently he managed to earn 4 winners' medals in 4 consecutive games. He won the treble in '99, and then due to injury didn't play again until we secured the title against Spurs in 2000. He didn't manage the requisite games but was given special dispensation owing to his injury.
It was still a mistake to have signed him. We were 5yrs (at best 3yrs) too late in getting him. And this is coming from a big time fan of his back in the day. It was painful watching him get roasted at times. Same thing if we got Hummels now: his window is now firmly shut to play at a high level in the Prem.
Agreed. He was a short term option that did fine and would have helped immeasurably behind the scenes.

Looks like we are back to mods randomly deleting posts. Apparently Lindelof is untouchable and cannot be criticised.
Based on what I've seen of him so far, I'd have to put Lindelof fifth on the CB depth...sixth if you include TFM as a CB. He's been a horror show without even a glimpse emerging of potential greatness. The Iceman looks a bag of nerves. But it's very, very early.
