For those of you who haven't had a chance to see it. Here is the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8RAIO4cI164&mode=related&search=
Gee, nice copyright infringement! Yeah, that's what we need to do -- encourage people to violate the copyrights of filmmakers who have invested in movies about American soccer. That'll sure keep the films coming...
Thank you so much...I've been wanting to see this film for a while but wasn't sure about buying it and my area flick spots don't have it in stock...I'm definitely buying it now. And don't mind this ikeman, android, big-brother loving douchebag....
You think copyright is just some arbitrary thing handed down from on high by some faceless Somebody in power? There's an entire class of us out here who feed our kids by making creative works for a living. We understand the value of copyright full well without anyone "telling" us to value it. Disagreeing with copyright or the principles behind it is all fine and well. Presuming that someone who defends copyrights and creators is simply "doing as they're told" is something else altogether. It's kind of ... goofy. But I know... I get it, I get it... You're a maverick, you're wise enough to be Fighting The Man, dude, etc., etc. Yes, it's exciting stuff, I get it. Meanwhile, I'll continue to protest that someone just ripped off somebody else by posting their entire soccer film on YouTube.
As part of that class of people who feed their kinds with creative works - you are a tool and a douche. In case you haven't noticed there is almost zero way to protect a creative work that is being used in a non-commercial manner once it is turned into a digital format. That said, if you feel that strongly, report it to Youtube authorities. They pull stuff just like this all the time.
Man just watching highlights of the Soccer Bowl on YouTube makes me think that soccer COULD have made it if NASL didn't fold
Copyright infringement or not, I found the documentary to very educational and worthwhile. Guess I was lucky to see it in time before youtube takes it off.
Yeh, I don't understand how the NY/NJ fans can fill the stands for a team that sucked, but now they can't for a team that is pretty good and has 2 DP's. And yes I know having some of the top players in the world helped pack the stands.
That may well be the case. But the fact that a digital work can't be "protected" doesn't mean we have to take the next step and actually encourage people to take advantage of it. As an aside: This is not an instance of a "non-commercial" use. YouTube (Google) is a for-profit company that sells advertising. YouTube is now sitting there getting eyeballs and advertising dollars for a film whose eyeballs and dollars were supposed to be going to someone else. At any rate, Viacom v. YouTube will be resolving all this soon enough. I don't own the film's copyright. I couldn't send YouTube a cease-and-desist on behalf of this work if I wanted to.
Yep...btw....THe Cosmos has this to say to all young Americans -boys and girls- from the past and present who have ever played soccer.... YOU ARE WELCOME.... where would this country soccer be w/o the influence of NY/NJ Cosmos (hey... GS IS in NJ after all ) And the cool thing about Giorgio, despite being teh jackass he is..... showing him as the President of his company, then pointing out that they filed for Chapter 11.... Priceless....
thank goodness there is far more MLS-owned (or at least sweetheart deal-like) stadia and steady Tv revenue though.... But the area in which i see a resemblance is in the media, particularly printed media, which is where the old dinasours prevail....and in a way, it's not wonder that they delight at the chance to tear the sport down ala early 70's, or mid-80 till present... Some people never apreciated the sport to begin with and at their age, never will..... So we are seeing similar thing said about soccer right now with Beckham, than we heard with Pele baqck then... Good thing is, that despite Lalas and Yallop horrible handling....what they (reporters)say -especially when they refer to soccer as being on a thin thread- is just NOT true....not in the present time....
Learning that Shep Messing posed nude made me ill. Other than the resultant vomit-in-my-mouth, I enjoyed this documentary. It was very interesting.
Just curious. The doc made it sound like NASL was Steve Ross, Ahmet Ertegün, and Nesuhi Ertegün as the major big players with economic and political leverage and....oh..yes..some other nameless owners that came and went. Was this the case? I know the doc's focus in on the Cosmos, but you get the picture that NY Cosmos was basically the professional team and the rest were just part of the circus.
They had some bad seasons with Pele according to the video and only won 1 title while he was there. It was after he left that they started winning titles. As for my thoughts on the video, they summed it up at the beginning when they spoke about Americans havinbg short attention spans. The other problem with soccer that they failed to mention though, is the lack of complaining. Americans like to work long hours and then complain about everything. Football and baseball fans love to talk strategy and complain. "Why didn't they run?" Why didn't they bunt?" You can't do that as often with soccer.
I disagree. Complaining and the what-if's is the general gist of discussion at least in Mexican sports media about FMF games. Everyone likes to play the coach in hindsight.
wow this doc was awesome, i never had any idea that soccer had reached such a height of popularity here in the US. Shame that all that bs happened. MLS is def taking off right now, but i still can't imagine a team ever filling 75,000 seats here on a regular basis
I love this documentary too!! On the subject of copyright, tambo has a point but as a general socer fan I would prefer people to see this movie rather than not see it. The people that watch it on youtube might never had wanted to part with their money to watch it, but now after watching they like it. Just for the record I went to the cinema to see it when it was released last year. There was 5 of us in a room that held 300 - nobody cared. I have subseuently bought it on DVD and just watched parts of it just now from the youtube link. So applying to another situation. I bought a copied cd of a band (it was The Cure) for $1 in thailand = and therefore in some people's eyes I'm stealing form the band. However, Ive since bought their entire back catalog legally = over $250 and seen them twice in concert = $70. They should be happy that I bought the $1 cd in Thailand! anyway, the movie is quality I love seeing the shots of Giamts stadium full. I think it's important people get to hear about Steve Ross he played a massive part in the Cosmos and soccer today in America.
Great documentary. It took me back to the days of the Toronto Blizzard. It also made me feel better about the strategy of MLS. Slow growth with SSS. In the end, the NASL became to diluted and the owners had no controls to keep spending at a reasonable level. People criticize Don Garber, but I think he has learned from the NASL's mistakes. We owe a lot to Ross, but at the same time soccer was a personal project for him and he just didn't manage it at a professional level. Still, the documentary makes it clear that NASL was the seed for all that has come since.
