    Fernandez:"it's a good result"
The olympian coach gave his first feelings about the good result in Rome this Wednesday.
"It's a good result. Our first halftime was good and the conceded goal was not really deserved. We played better during second halftime, we were offensive, and we were better at place kicks. It's far from being finished, it all depends on the second match. We now wish to come back to Marseilles and to get ready for the match against Bordeaux."

    Good info, thanks ZoltaR!

Mendoza played 25 minutes. If you saw the game, how did Mendoza do? Did he have a good game, average or bad?

Meïte, the man of the match.

Meïte, the man of the match. Two strong pictures will stay in mind after the match facing Olympians against Lazio in Rome. The first one is the altercation between Di Canio and Meïte. The second is the equalization of Marseilles coming from the right foot of Meïte. Wednesday evening, in Olimpico stadio in Rome, the game between OM and Lazio has only begun since one hour and a half, but players fought each others : players of OM have been hit. Suddenly, a tackle warmed up the Italians, especially Paolo Di Canio. The symbolic player of Lazio get his nerves on Abdoulaye Meïte. This came to everybody’s eyes, in the stadium and on screens. Forehead against forehead, the two players are joined by their partners. Italians are excited whereas players from Marseilles, lead by Frederic Dehu, ran to separate them from each others and calmed it down." It was just a provocation to make the pressure rise, according to Abdou Meïte « They played it with italian style : punchy, but we know how to answer. »
A few minutes later, Olympians concede a goal from this well known Di Canio. font color="#46a0eb">" admits Meïte.

In second halftime, Olympians came back in the match. At the 70th minute, OM gets a place kick. The powerful shot of Taiwo is cast away, first by a defender, then by Sereni, who is lucky to watch the ball going to his goal post. The next is told by Abdou : " « I took back a ball which just came from the goalpost. I was at the right time at the right place. I watched again the video and it wasn’t so easy to do. »

Carrasso is saved by his right goal post on a head from Tare. Olympians had in their hands a good result in a stadium where they were severely beated last time they came.… « We didn’t want to get burn. We stood united. We would rather have a drawn match and make the difference in Marseilles. Qualification implies to play two matches. This drawn match allows us to have keys in our hands. »

Before playing against Romans in the second match, OM will have to beat Girondins Bordeaux. A lot of matches which could, in addition to the warmth, be a problem for the Marseilles’ physical condition. »I’m a bit tired admits Meïte, but we are physically prepared. We don’t feel bad physically. We do our jobs, without losing our times. We are here to play matches, we gave our best without thinking of something else. »

mendoza didn't play enough for me to judge him. He seems to have a good left foot, and shot a couple of good corner kicks ...
future will tell us more about this player..

I just look on it that OM got royally screwed with the draw. Lazio, Newcastle, Marseille, and Deportivo are all better than the 4 semifinalists in Lens' bracket. None of us stateside could see the match, so it's hard to say more than that, other than obviously being pleased with the result.

Yes, I do know. And I didn't want to be too obvious. ;)

Anyways I heard Mendoza did incredibly well for his first official start. He was subbed in the 80th minute, probably with a big round of applause.... this is why i'm downloading the game. :D

Besides the fact that he scored to day.

You have no idea how that left foot has left a poor, sour, sad, angry and lastly caused us to hang ourselves by our never-dying falsehoods.

    nethertheless...
    OM 3-0 Lazio: echos
The Intertoto final with some informations on La Corogne (next adversory of OM) and the suspension of Beye and Meïte for first match and a come back in pictures on the atmosphere. These are the echos.

    La Corogne- OM, next tuesday
OM will play next Tuesday the first match of the final of the Intertoto Cup on the ground of La Corogne. Spanian get qualified against New Castle, winning 2-1 at St James Park thanks to Andrade and Munitis (2-1 first match). The return match will take place at Marseilles on Tuesday, August, 23.
It’s the first time these two clubs play against each other in European Cup. At stake, a place in Uefa cup, which first turn will be on september.

    marseille is anti-fasciste message

    La Corogne ended up?

Champion in 1999-2000, always in the three first winners since, La Corogne had a difficult year in 2004-2005. The team from Gallice ended up at the eighth place of Liga.
However, the team now trained by Joaquim Caparos, has still in his ranks people that do matter : Valeron, Munitis, Luque or Diego Tristan.
In France, La Corogne evokes two matches out of common : the defeat inflicted in Monaco (8-3) and the victory 4-3 against PSG whereas Paris was winning on score 0-3.
To get more informations on La Corogne : http://www.canaldeportivo.com/

    Beye and Meïte suspended

Already warned up in this Intertoto Cup, Habib Beye and Abdoulaye Meïte will be suspended for La Corogne-OM after having received an other yellow card against Lazio.

Marseilles had a message to send
Olympian fans had a message to send to Lazio ones. They didn’t do things just in part : flags of several nationalities sewed together, streamer (« Marseilles is anti-fascist » at the Winners), and huge bronca for the sulphurous symbol Paolo Di Canio.

    Lazio, 4th victim of OM

Even though they reign over the old continent, italian clubs represent victories for OM. Lazio became the fourth transalpine victim after Milan AC in 1991, FC Bologne in 1999 and Inter Milan in 2004. Obviously without mention the consecration in Munich, neither the Uefa final against Parma. Only Juventus in 1972-73 succeeded to eliminate OM.

    OM.net having an official lunch
It’s a tradition in european matches, the host club welcame the visitor on the match day by a lunch in company of the Uefa delegated. It already was the case this Wednesday before the semifinal return in Intertoto Cup against OM and Lazio, a delegation of the roman club was welcame in the Commanderie.
    OM.net was there

    OM 3-0 Lazio : Bravissimo !
OM beated Lazio thanks to goals of Niang, Mendoza and Ribery. Thanks to an energetic and inspired Wilson Oruma too. Olympians will play against La Corogne in final. First match next Tuesday in Spain.

    OM 3-0 LAZIO
    1-0 Niang (60th)
    2-0 Mendoza (62nd)
    3-0 Ribéry (65th)

One never knows what will tomorrow look like, but one thing we know is that this Marseilles-Lazio was outstanding. Whatever happens, the Intertoto Cup should win acclaim: indeed the feelings conveid by this semifinal were great. Pure pleasure. Firstly, OM made a show-time with a lot of occasions, as if the score of the first match (1-1) didn’t exist. Then we enjoy being noisier and noisier at each occasion.
The Velodrome was full of joy. As it was not that usual, the feeling was even more intense.
The Olympians, playing in 5-3-2, were transformed. It appears that Bordeaux was an accident indeed.
From the start, the 4 players Oruma-Ribery-Mendoza-Niang were ready to reach the unreachable. Despite a few mistakes (due to an over-motivation and sometimes a lack of communication) OM was the best in first period. On the wings, Franck Ribery was driving his adversaries mad. While Oruma was being painful in line.
During the break, we were saying that OM would finally pay for his too many lost occasions. We were wrong. The second period was full of big times!
This thrilling game turned out to be in favour of OM after one match-hour. Mamadou Niang made a good use of a wonderful recuperation of Oruma and deceived Sereni with a cross shot. The audience hardly sat and exploded with joy once again. Oruma, still, was inspired to pass to Mendoza on his left. And the Peruvian scored his first goal with the white shirt in an amazed Velodrome. The bad luck of first halftime was turning into good.
You want more? Seemed to say players to their supporters. 180 seconds later, Ferreira shot for Ribery at the box corner. The midfielder made the goal scream with a clear shot, and finally turned the page on 5 minutes of showtime. OM was qualified, so it played quiet until the ovation of the stadium. Bordeaux is just an old thing to forget. After an evening like this we may hope and even will the best for the future.

Deportivo had two players sent off and finished the match with only eight men after using up all their substitutions before Marseille ran out 5-3 aggregate winners.

The French team halved Deportivo's advantage after just four minutes when Nigerian defender Taiwo blasted a 20-metre free kick which goalkeeper Jose Franciso Molina could only palm out to striker Frank Ribery.

Deportivo equalised two minutes later when Jorge Andrade fired the ball past keeper Cedric Carasso after a scramble in the penalty area.

As tensions flared, Russian referee Nikolai Ivanov ended a brawl between Ribery and midfielder Aldo Duscher by showing red cards to both players.

Deportivo defender Joan Capdevila was shown a second yellow card to send him back to the dressing room 20 minutes from time and the Spanish side were reduced to eight man after an injured defender limped off and they had used their last substitute.

Marseille central defender Abdoulaye Meite scored his side's second goal in the 65th minute, substitute Mamadou Niang struck twice and Wilson Oruma completed the rout in the final minute.

"It was pure magic. It was a moment you can only have at the Stade Veldrome," said Marseille coach Jean Fernandez whose team have collected only one point from their first four Ligue 1 games, their worst start since 1968.

"I think that we went through such a difficult period that the players really wanted to prove their worth and gave everything to regain some of their pride," he added.

    Why the mad face, Randy?
    Deportivo fan?
    :)

It was them who were demolished by
Monaco, last year or a couple of years ago,
wasn't it? (hence my "never play in Southern-

    Yup.

Deportivo is my favorite Spanish club. Has been for about 15 years. Don't know if I'm a "fan"...but certainly a strong sympathizer.
