Those subsidies are criminal in terms of screwing the citizens who pay taxes. They never recoup the amount of the subsidy.

After winning olympic medals, most of the athletes would take advantage to find a good job, career, education to prepare them for the next life chapter. Some athletes are coming from a rich family background that may help them just to focus on their sports. In case of Phelps, in addition to government's funding, he is probably very rich from all the sponsors deals that allow him to focus on swimming only. I feel that these 2 are the major factors contribute to his success in addition to his talent.

Anyway, now it is time for track and fields next. Let's see if Usain Bolts rise to the occasion!

Off to penalties now. Two goals each called off in the last five minutes by the match official. Call against the US was probably right, call against Sweden was obviously wrong; striker was clearly not off sides. It will be cruel if they a knocked out because of PKs.

US out, one PK saved and one skied over the goal while Sweden had one saved and every one else right on target.

Hope Solo's comments were quite some sour grapes. Shame, really.

Ah honestly, how often have we not heard those words. Maybe its a first in womens soccer, but in mens soccer it happens frequently. From memory c.ronalda said pretty much the same if not worse last EK.

We should applaud Solo for venting and expressing her frustration through words :D

I watched the match and it looked just like an Ajax match under FdB. Sweden packed everyone in and dared the US to score. They were lucky to have tied the match up as Morgan's goal came off a ping pong play in the box. Sweden got robbed in extra time when the linesman totally got the off side call wrong. I hope the US coach resigns as she really has no clue how to put together a team.

Curbo's right, how many times have we heard a male player vent like that. Trouble is Solo has a weird history and that's what people were reacting to.

The Washington Post reported that some athletes are complaining about the Ethiopian runner who shattered the WR for the 10K run yesterday by about 30 seconds. The runner said she was clean.

With incidents like this it stops being sports.

That said, I enjoy watching some of the sports.

For the Dutch situation this is an excellent take (this one mentions too Australian government invests 10 times as much in elite performance sports):

    http://www.ad.nl/nieuws/topsportland-op-basis-van-toeval-en-uitschieters~a4db9698/

    The highlighted outtakes read as:

"We are as small country above average in sport, but that is not due to policy"

"As Dutch sporting talent you are especially dependent on your parents"

"Dutch politicians are first in line when sporting success should be celebrated, but they have mostly cut back on sports in recent years"

Rightly so, it finishes with the conclusion that maybe it is just correct for the government and lotteries to not 'waste' too much money on elite sports... But then the normal expectations should be lower, with a top 20 position regarded as "punching above our weight" rather than becoming dissapointed.

    edit:

apparently the writer already made this prediction in January 2016. He mentions below (as example) that the track cyclists use outdated bicycles from 2004 whereas others have each new year a new version.

It's Brazil vs Sweden and Canada vs Germany in women, Brazil vs Hondura and Nigeria vs Germany in men. I'd like to see Sweden vs Canada in women and Brazil vs Germany in men for finals.

^^My bad, I forgot they lost to Britain. I still think that Group A was stronger. Anyway Dutch ladies advance and get a rematch with Germany.

This will be World War 3. We better not lose.

Our Oranje men lost against Germany 4 years ago, and I'm still sickened by it :(

Sweden/Brazil women off to PKs now after a very boring 120 minutes. Sweden are worse than Greece in 2002, they had no intention of attacking just like against the US in the last round. Teams that play like this deserve to get beaten by a lot of goals.

Our big guns Schippers, Kromowidjojo, Van Gelder and Zonderland all disappointed. Amazing that we have 8 gold medals.

A total disaster that Belgium with not a tenth of the members Holland has now runs circles around them in hockey. The most Dutch team sport of all team sports. And it was not a fluke result. Completely deserved.
