Da Cfo posted this in the WUSA forum:

"Women's soccer will be on MSNBC (weekdays) and either CNBC (weekends) or NBC (the Sunday semifinal match involving the US).

No coverage of women's soccer on Telemundo.

Telemundo will have MEN's Futbol, particularly matches involving Latin American teams and the US. If the US advances into the medal round, then there may be possible coverage on MSNBC (weekdays) or CNBC (weekends)."

The U.S. women's team will get the semifinal on NBC. The men get on telemundo and maybe, just maybe, on a cable channel at 2 A.M.

    "I did't even know we had a men's team."

No wonder with TV placement like this.

But you wouldn't listen when he said to relax on Page 1, that if the US was in the final, it would get more coverage. What do they call that? Selective something or other?

I'm going to respond to you, Kenn, by imitating Thomas. Just taking four recorded statements that make no sense together or by themselves for that matter. It'll save TF the trouble.

Women's soccer was hyped to the high heavens in Sydney, while men's soccer was not hyped at all.

One thing for sure, the publicity is not guaranteed for men's soccer in the U.S.

    "I did't even know we had a men's team."

No wonder with TV placement like this.

So Tom, in the eleven days in which you have been complaining about the time slot of the men's final, have you started a letter writing campaign, or even written a letter to either FIFA, the IOC, or the Athens Olympic Organizing Committee (or whatever they're called) expressing your dissatisfaction?

Wouldn't it be far more productive to share your feelings with the people who are in a position to make a change?

    Just a thought.

No wonder Landon feels the way he does. And something else, with fans like this, no wonder soccer faces an uphill battle in the U.S.

Don't you mean "men's soccer faces an uphill battle?"

Because, after all, we all know that the women get a free pass on everything.

You know, I don't know why it feels so good to prove you wrong. But it does. It just feels oh so good to make you totally irrelevant because you have the Internet research skill of a giraffe.

Notice it doesn't say which gender. And since the matches are doubleheaders, it's definitely a possibility that they will do both.

Notice "teams" in the plural. So they are banking on the US men making it and they are planning to show them on English-language television. And with nothing else being contested, the men play at your favorite 9 p.m. time slot, perfect for better coverage.

So who are you going to believe? Oliver or the only official word from the broadcasters? I know you'll ignore th efacts, but since this is about the fourth time I have posted them here, I figured I'd rub your nose in it again, just for kicks.

And you say the women will get primo semi coverage and the men will get relegated to 2 a.m.? I certainly doubt it since they both have 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. semifinal matches.

And the women will be such a sinch to get top-notch prime-time coverage against women's gymnastic individual finals and the men's 100M final.

Of course the men will have competition for those prime-time hours, but you're delusions again don't win out against the true relaities that virtually nothing is etched in stone and the things that have been released completely coutradict what you try so hard to believe.

http://images.fifa.com/olympics/2004/OFT_Match schedule.pdf - official tournament schedule. Once again, all men's games with the exception of the final, will be played in the evening.

And one more thing, Tom, it's quite possible that the US Olympic men's team will feature a player who has already been the subject of at least two A1 stories in the Washington Post and several ESPN News features, has a million-dollar deal with Nike, and, according to this article (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A38919-2003Aug9.html), sometimes needs a police escort to get him off the field. If it's determined that he is ready for the team, his story will be hyped beyond anything you have ever seen for Olympic women's soccer.

But, of course, those darn women will take over everything and impose their agenda on us hapless men during the Olympics, and Thomas will be there to gloat and say "I told you so."

Those women control everything. Darn them.

As for the Trib doing a full page on girls' soccer...anyone who reads the Trib for more than about two weeks will realize that they do a full page on Prep sports every week during the school year. Girl's soccer is a spring sport in Illinois (boys play in the fall), and their championship is one of the last ones to be decided before school lets out for the summer.

Spain - playing in front of their King and Queen defeated Poland on an injury time goal (I forget by whom). I remember it being referred to as a "buzzer-beater".

And I'm all for "coming out" parties with women involved. Especially attractive ones.

I can't believe I read the whole thing.

Julie is saying that there's more publicity for the Olympics than for the Women's World Cup? God, she's perceptive. That's why I love her.

She said the publicity was guaranteed even if they fell flat on their faces (unlikely given how few countries have any kind of women's soccer team).
The only thing certain about publicity for the USMNT is that they have to fight for it and may not get it even then.

I will. It was the phraseology of one reporter (not a quote from Foudy) referring to the interest of the women's team a year or so after they won the World Cup. It hardly implies any sortof bias, just acknowledges a fact that they were very well-known at the time. Given the natural cycle of WWC followed by the Olympics, that's always a possibility.

But just because they are known doesn't mean they were more favored. The men's team that time around wasn't well known. Give Lanny Cakes a chance to show his abs again and put Freddy out there and the story could be totally different.

I pity you, Tom. It must just suck to live in a world where everything is decided based on things people say to/about Julie Foudy and there's no such concept as waiting to see what really happens.

And since Tom is loathe to present an accurate picture, letme provide a link to the story and the entire paragraph he is cribbing from.

    http://espn.go.com/oly/summer00/news/2000/0927/784173.html

It is not a quote as I said, but the writer's words. If you read the whole thing, it is put is a fairer context than Tom tries to do.

I'll save Tom the trouble of coming up with a response to monster by answering for him:

Two A.M. U.S. time is the worst possible slot. Burying it this shallow grave will not help soccer become more popular.

And, oh by the way, just in case anyone had any doubt that Tom's memory was faulty about the Trib not reporting the times of the US games in the Confederations Cup, I went and checked.

    He's wrong. They did.

    I know you're all stunned.
