The way the injuries appear to be going, if we added a 3rd extra period (rather than go to KFTPM), we'd soon be down to 7v7....
Is it possible to give credit to the ref in the sense that the game itself was quite a spectacle? Awful refereeing. Stunning game. Congrats to both teams.
The handball was absolutely correct. The call on the keeper just before that should have never been made.
I'm sure someone will do that math and justify it, but I'm not sure how you get 3 minutes of added time on a 15 minute period barring a serious, prolonged injury and clear timewasting.
No. Because it makes it difficult for every referee that actually calls a good game. That was really bad and people could have got seriously hurt. It's even worse when it occurs in a stunning game, because it gets more play and attention. Agreed.
It's that old tournament mantra.... "Let the players decide it on the field, not from the mark." That said, I completely agree with you. you are adding 20% of the period back on. I doubt 20% was lost in the course of play.
You think enough for 3 minutes, though? My point would be that we see 45-minute halves all the time, with 2 injuries, that don't result in 3 minutes added time. I don't know. Like I said, I'm sure it's technically justified. It just didn't feel right or expected to me.
Game would have never got to that point. The tackles started flying in and the dirtier stuff at the end happened because she never--once--tried to clamp down. Players knew the card wasn't coming out and they acted accordingly. She could have done this game, I'd guess, with 4-5 yellow cards and no red. A couple in the first half and then the more obvious reckless or tactical ones in the second half would have been enough to modify player behavior.
If the responsibility of a high level ref is to produce an event, didn't we all want to see 3 more minutes of a game that fun? But seriously, I think refs at elite levels add more time than most of us for entertainment purposes. Almost like an encore at a concert.
Honestly, I would've been surprised with less than 3. That said, she added ZERO to the first half. Three to the second and one to the first OT. Not the least strange call in the game.
OK I found the above referenced play: 57:47 CAN keeper gathers a cross 58:05 CAN keeper releases the ball to punt.
That may or may not be the right call but if you make that call, you have to make the call against Rapinoe earlier for knocking down a long cross from outside with her arm. Easier call to make.
I just ran it. Canada should be screaming for more. She was short. Time lost to injury (roughly) Buehler -:50 Schmidt - 1:10 Scott - 1:50 O'hara - :40 1 substitution.
