No matter what manner of missed calls and misdeeds we see in soccer on occasion, we can all hold our heads high and say, "At least we're not boxing referees and judges." That sport is simple farce.
I've been around long enough to agree with this, even as a non-boxing fan. But what did I miss this year?
I’m sure this thread will get removed or deleted but boxing refereeing always surprises me because it’s completely subjective. Outside of losing a point for knockdowns, it’s literally just “how do you think each fighter looked?” Although I guess it’s similar for gymnastics and diving as well
Isn't amateur scoring like a point for each time (3 of 5?) ringside refs agree a punch was landed? Or have I missed a few recerts...
my understanding is points are added up for punches that land in head and body target areas and deducted for hits to prohibited areas like the kidneys, below the waist and the back of the head. It doesn’t much matter how hard the hits are. I think a knockdown is 3-5 points for punches landed. and since the 2016 Olympics the winner of each round is awarded 10 points - always. You don’t just total up punches during the match. the loser of each round is awarded between 7 and 9 points, even if he was outscored badly in a round. Judges are supposed to score rounds using the following system: 10-9: Close round 10-8: Clear winner 10-7: Total dominance most times the loser of the round is awarded 9 points. so it is quite possible under the new scoring system for a boxer to only win one of the three rounds and still win on points if , for instance, the boxer is judged to lose two rounds narrowly and totally dominates an opponent for one round.
They tried that for a while. Now they’re on the traditional 10-point must system as spelled out above.
The USA’s Joshua Edwards was flat-out robbed. The ref deducted a point for a phantom foul. A couple of judges gave his Italian opponent the third round for doing nothing — he actually turned his back every time the ref broke up a clinch, buying himself time because he was completely gassed and getting clobbered. Then a U.S. woman *won* a terrible decision yesterday, taking the third round despite basically running backwards and hardly even creating the distance to throw a punch.
May I suggest a terrific read called The End of the Perfect 10: The Making and Unmaking of Gymnastics' Top Score by Dvora Meyers? Really interesting for a lot of reasons, one of which is trying to retain artistry while emphasizing skill points in judging.
I listened to a podcast this week that lamented the "new" scoring system in figure skating because it takes away the "artistry." I think if they want to have an art contest, they can have an art contest outside the Olympics.
If I were king of the world, or at least king of the olympics, and could eliminate whatever sports I wanted to, I would eliminate any sport in which the winners are determined by subjective judging. Of course that would include some popular sports, particularly gymnastics and figure skating, so it would be fiercely opposed.
Rules to be considered a "sport" #1: The winner must be measured by some objective scale. Objects or participants through or into space. Time. Distance. Eliminated: Gymnastics, figure skating, diving... And, apparently now, olympic boxing, #2: It must be reasonably possible to pull a hamstring while participating. Eliminated: NASCAR, chess, E-Sports... #3: It can't be practical to drink beer while participating. Eliminated: bowling, golf, darts... Those are wonderful activities, but they are just that: activities.
"eliminated from being classified as a sport", not existentially eliminated entirely. If you want to be a fan of can racing, or classical music, or hot air ballooning, by all means, go for it!
They need to combine the judged sports. Who wouldn't watch synchronized breakdancing on moving surfboards?
Here’s a question: At the Olympics, they have two forms of basketball (full court and 3x3) and two forms of volleyball (indoor and beach). Why do they only have one form of soccer? They could easily add futsal or beach soccer.
I've long thought futsal should be an Olympic sport, and I'm coming around on the idea of beach soccer as well.
I could certainly see futsal being added. That said, the Olympics are beyond capacity at this point. I keep thinking they'll need to split up at some point.
We can keep skateboarding and break dancing in the X Games, bring futsal in, and it's still a net reduction of one sport.
