3. BARCLAY ON HIS WAY: Talks had been ongoing for more than a month
regarding Devin Barclay moving from San Jose to D.C. United. The
Quakes were reluctant to trade Barclay and D.C. hadn't been offering
enough to change the Quakes' thinking.

But when Ben Olsen came out of the U.S. game against Argentina
Saturday feeling pain in his oft-repaired right ankle, D.C. sweetened
its offer and San Jose agreed.

The Quakes will swap places with D.C. in the upcoming supplemental
draft and will also receive a conditional pick in the 2005
SuperDraft. As the team with the worst record in 2002, D.C. had held
the first supplemental pick.

Olsen left the U.S. camp in Florida and didn't accompany the team to
Jamaica. He will have tests performed on his ankle by D.C. United
doctors this week.

U.S. team doctor Bert Mandelbaum examined the ankle but said nothing
will be known until the tests are done. Olsen suffered a fractured
ankle in June of 2000 and reinjured the ankle while on loan to
Nottingham Forest the following March. He underwent four ankle
surgeries before returning to competitive play on July 27, 2002.

The Quakes used an allocation last year to claim Barclay, 19, from
the contracted Mutiny. He played forward in Tampa Bay but was moved
to the right side of midfield by Quakes coach Frank Yallop and played
12 games (two starts) last year without generating a goal or an
assist.

Barclay grew up in Annapolis, Md., and signed with MLS out of high school.
