Looking further... it was 6-1. Cunningham had a pair, Dante had a hat trick. Mike Duhaney had one as well.
And I'd enjoy seeing the one vs 1 FC Nuremberg, where we beat them 7-2. But I doubt there's video of that.
My third game is May 15, 1999. I was in graduate school at the University of Rochester (NY) and bought some of the last available tickets to the first game at Crew Stadium. We drove from Rochester and spent a few days in Columbus. I was a like kid waking up from a dream only to realize that the shiny new stadium was real. Definitely something I never thought would happen. We were in the last row, section 206. We didn’t dress nearly warm enough. It was beautiful. I fell in love all over again with a yellow soccer team.
Probably been posted here before, but I cannot remember -- so here it is again https://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2016/11/08/home-brave-top-10-moments-columbus-mapfre-stadium
The only one I wasn't at for sure was the gal's game (maybe the Jamaica match, as I do not recall that game).
2005 Home Opener...we put the beat down on LA Galaxy and I remember quite a bit of snow along the sidelines (field was clear). I believe Everclear (the band) played a halftime show and Ante Razov scored his one and only goal for the Crew. Such simpler times...
Number 8 should be named the day jairadballerina's son was born and we got to watch our first game together while Mrs ballerina slept.
My son-in-laws first ever game. East Upper Deck for that game. Worst mistake ever with the "slight breeze" in your face.
The only major difference was the telephone ring when they came back from breaks. Even the announcers were off-site. The image at 5:56 is true Columbus supporter life in 2002. Also, for as much as we stunk, it was amazing how many titles we won between 2002-2009.
What a lifetime ago. I know I have shared before, but 2002 was the seminal year in my soccer fandom. That year cemented lifelong fandom for me. I went from loving soccer all throughout my life to being a real fan of the game. Being at that game was the icing on the cake that would launch into the following years to come. @TownKrier. Glad to have shared that game with you and many other Nats and Crew games both home and away.
Ah, those were the days. I read Bill Archer’s post describing all the rain during that match, and I started wondering if my memory was going, because I didn’t remember it that way. I remembered it has been cold but not raining. He must’ve been thinking of something else. What I did very much forget was that we won that title with 10 men on the field, because McCardMe got himself sent off late. I had forgotten what an absolute moment of madness that was.
Quit talking about the 2002 USOC Final. I'm still pissed about not skipping my HS soccer team's playoff game to witness it in person. I got a grand total of 0 minutes in that game.
I think this might be confusing the 2003 home opener, where it was cold and windy, with spitting rain starting at the beginning of the 10 minute OT. That was a nationally televised game. The 2005 opener was an evening game where Razov scored and it was sleeting sideways at points when it wasn't raining. Both were miserable games.
Everclear could have been 2003 for sure...I just remember seeing Art Alexakis walking around the plaza shortly after kickoff and calling my gf (future Mrs Ballerina) a snow bunny (due to the fact she was bundled up in all that winter gear). Fun times...
For quite a few years at the beginning of the decade, it seemed like we had terrible weather with the home opener and regular season finale.
