Give me a top 5 list of #Crew96 games you'd want to see but the list can't include '08 MLS Cup or any of that run's playoff gamesMine:1. 08 TFC at Crew (Lenny & Garey winner)2. 09 Chivas at Crew, 7 goals, 2 Red cards and like 100 fouls3. 10 Revs at Crew. Robbie goes shirtless https://t.co/hefqsjjTIK— Brett Hiltbrand (@brett_hiltbrand) March 14, 2020 Saw this, thought it would be good discussion under the circumstances. The five I came up with, in no particular order.. The knockout game at Atlanta. Amazing action despite being scoreless. Drama of the PK shootout, capped off by Jahn. Crew 4, Revolution 3. August 26, 2012. Higuain scores two first-half free kicks. Crew overcome 2-0 deficit to win. Crew 4, Metros 2. September 18, 2004. Edson Buddle's four-goal game. May 19, 2001. Andrulis' first game in charge. 9-man crew defeats DC United in overtime on a Cunningham golden goal. Crew 5, DC 0. Decision Day 2015. Because, well... duh.
I don't have 5 off the top, but the lists above sound like a good start. A match I'd like to see again was the L to RSL that ended our 09 run. Don't recall seeing a replay, or wanting to, I was crushed.
I know the 2008 final has to be on the list but to me, that simi-final against Chicago was a hell of a match. Chicago had a really good team that year and I felt the two best teams played in the simi that year and if we got past them, we’d bring home the cup.
I was just playing by the rules laid out by that guy’s initial tweet that said the playoff run was out of bounds for this list. But otherwise, yeah. I thought the Eastern conference Final against Chicago was actually more satisfying than the cup win. That was such a fun night. The crowd, the Chad Marshall goal, wasting one of our rivals to get there... loved it.
My list starts with April 13, 1996. A day I fell in love with a team. I never thought I’d get to see it. I grew up as the NASL was ramping up and falling apart. It was magic. I found myself in a crowd of other people that loved soccer when I wasn’t sure if that many people really liked the sport.
Wasn’t there a match that we won at the last moment despite being down a man? I’m drawing a blank on the date and opponent.
In May of 1996 we beat New England with two late goals but I don't remember if we were down to 10. That game would make my list of top 10 - not sure of top 5.
Especially since we got to show our love for McBride and thank him for choosing the fire instead of COLUMBUS!
The second game on my list of 5 games is July 22,2018. It wasn’t a beautiful game just a beauty of a finish from Wil Trapp. Orlando City can suck it. Just such a fun goal to watch. Over and over and over. Chills.
Better to have been there and experienced it. Probably one of the top 5 I've seen in person. No. 1 was Bonhof vs Clemence (Gladbach vs Liverpool, 1978 first leg, European Cup semis). No. 2 was Wynalda in Detroit vs Switzerland (after that, I'm less sure).
Don't forget who the Fire keeper was in that game. One of my top 3 would be the Open Cup. If anyone knows if it is on video, I would love to get a link.
I don't remember why, but I was in the parking lot when that happened. I never leave games early. I have regrets.
There was a home game, maybe in the early to mid-2000’s, that we hung 6 on somebody; maybe the Mutiny or the Rapids? Somebody got a hat trick; I want to say it was Jeffro. Multi-goal games for the good guys like that one are always fun.
Wouldn't it be awesome if we could get The Crew to allow Fox Sports Ohio (or Fox Sports Columbus?) to replay "Crew Classic matches" from the entire history of the club during this corona virus downtime? I assume the club has rights to this material? I don't know about you, but having these classic matches on once a week would really help me.
There was a 4-0 win against the Revs in 2008 that may be the most fun I've had in Crew Stadium. The chants were loud, the stadium electric, and the outcome never in doubt. I probably also had the right amount to drink and the right people with me, which always helps when it happens.
There was a game against the Mutiny when Valderrama got a red card for spitting on John Harkes. I think we won 5-0, and I think Dante Washington went nuts in that match.
