I talked to a friend at the University of Central Oklahoma, the university that houses Wantland stadium where OKC's possible team will play, tonight and she said the school had a student vote to see if the students were willing to be charged to help renovate the stadium to get it in line with MLS expansion requirements. IT PASSED!! I still need to get more information about the details of the vote, but this is great news. Expand in OKC!!!
UCO actually consults their students with regard to new fees? That's the first time I've ever heard of a college doing that. Sachin
Just because there was a student vote doesn't mean that it carries any weight. It's nice that it passed, but I kinda doubt that such a vote will determine stadium funding in OKC.
They do the same thing at the University of Oklahoma... Boren usually listens to the students (unless it is whoring out a war memorial [our football stadium; Oklahoma Memorial Stadium--> The Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium). Virtually everything - especially fees/tuition - comes before the student body here, too... I guess its just the Oklahoma way (cough) go Sooners, beat the Buffs (cough)
When I was a student at Michigan State, we voted on whether or not to raise tuition to build what became the Breslin Center. It passed in a landslide.
I just talked to the UCO President's secretary about the stadium vote. She said it passed by a big margin. The stadium renovations should happen regardless of a MLS team, but the renovations will be on a much larger scale if OKC gets a team. She wasn't sure if Express Sports would be assisting in the financing if we got a team. I believe renovations are somewhere in the area of $20 million. BTW, here's a link to some drawings of the possible stadium renovations: http://www.mlsinokc.com/images.html I think it looks pretty good.
Student Vote I know when Oklahoma State officials were still planning on the Gallegher-Iba Arena expansion, University officials went to the students to see if the were willing to raise fees to help pay for the project and that was widely supported by both the SGA and student body. This is a great step to get a team in the OKC area.
I beg to disagree with the comments about student stroke at OU, but it seems to be a matter of opinion... And yes, quite a few people knew it was a war memorial, along with our student union. Also, the reason why resilient is with an "A" is when I wrote a creative piece in high school, a character was Resiliant (yeah, creative name, I know... it was thrown together at the last minute...) In that writing, my fingers became trained to spell the word with an "A"... I usually catch myself, but after mid-terms (when I filled out my app for bigsoccer and that post) in the leeward hours of a no-sleep binge, all bets are off... sometime I'll go through and change it. By the way, I went to OU partly for the "excellent" journalism school, but since the works it produces (the newspaper, mainly) isn't worth the grace of touching my tail as toilet paper, I dropped it. Now I'm a political science major, since the world obviously doesn't have enough scumbags yet As for the Board of Regents, the reason why they increased tuition anyway is that it was the best for the university. That's the Board of Regents' job - to do the best for the university. It may not always be what the students want, but in all its what the students need. Think of it this way, a prof might have the power to cancel class the Monday after OU/TX, and the students might bug the prof to cancel class, but the prof makes the correct decision by having class that Monday. Now, to bring this back to MLS... either way, the students and UCO said that they'd pay, which gives their leadership little to no reason to deny the reconstruction of Wantland. Also, if MLS does or does not expand to OKC in the next few years, I'll understand that they'll have thought about their decision and made what they believe is the best one. Its their decision to make for the best of MLS. Let's have faith that they make the best decision for MLS (hopefully by expanding in OKC.) ~ ~ ~ How 'bout 'dem Sooners? Three time, three time, three time Big XII Champions!!! BOOMER!!!
I call them Sooners... O-K-L-A-H-O-M-A Our chant rolls on and on Thousands strong join heart and song In Alma Mater's praise Of campus beautiful by day and night Our colors proudly gleaming red and white 'Neath the western sky OU's chant will never die Live on University. Nope. I couldn't have said that. I would have used a semicolon. Neither, just a true, spirited fan... or as you would say, a "loser." At least I'm not a poke...
As a lifelong Longhorn Fan, I now must go bathe myself in acid to rid myself of all the stench surrounding me after reading the last several posts of this thread. The only thing Oklahoma is good for is driving through on the way to go visit my parents in Texas. I make sure and plan so I don't have to stop and spend any money in Oklahoma. Now that "Lil' Miss Priss Chris has graduated, maybe we'll actually beat you guys next year. War Major Applewhite!!! Out.
(whistles the Texas Tech Fight Song) Who are your three-time, three-time, three-time Big XII champions? (whistles Boomer Sooner)
How 'bout 'dem BUCKEYES? NATIONAL Champions!!! Sorry, there is this scumbag kid that I hate who goes to OU and he drives me nuts. I have no other reason to dislike the Sooners, but he is enough. Furthermore, I have always been against MLS expansion to OKC...but it looks like ya'll have your stuff together out there. Good luck!
He didn't clarify that it was conference tourney champions. The outright Big XII champs the past two years have been Kansas and Iowa St. the year before
Who beat is the only team to Bob Stoops two times in a row? (whistles Ride'em Cowboys) Honestly, the Big XII South should be between three teams (OSU, OU, UT) and will be a heckuva season. Also, since I am at my parents house this Spring Break, would it be wise to go to the Mex-Bolivia game at Texas Stadium tonight (and pull for Bolivia)?
Hey State, why don't you 30-something-peat, and then we can talk... Hey State, why don't you win seven - hell, one - national championships, and then we can talk... Hey State, why don't you realize we could drop the next 50 games to you, and we'll still be ahead of you by a dozen in the series... Hey State, why don't you get your soccer team's record against us somewhere close to 1-9, and we'll talk... Boomer F'n Sooner
Hey Sooner, why don't you win 44 national championships and then we can talk... I can concede this one, our past record has been around mediocre to poor (I'll atest to this b/c my parents had season tickets during the early-90s ) I not sure what your talking about with this one, since both schools do not have a varsity men's soccer team. However, both schools do have a women's varsity team and I know the series is 7-1 in favor of the Cowgirls (including this past seasons 3-2 victory that allowed the Cowgirls to go to the Big XII tourny instead of the Lady Sooner). Even this series and then we can talk... Actually, I prefer the more unpredictable, see-saw battles for the next couple of years (like men's basketball the past 12-plus years). Its make the Bedlam rivalry more meaningful and passionate.
pokefan- On the soccer issue, check the records for old clubs that ran autonomously much like the current rugby clubs (which, by the way, the men played its second string against you guys and won 38-28 - ah, the irony - and the women shut you guys out 80-0)... If the stats given to me are right, the record is at the ratio of 9-1... At any rate, this rivalry takes back the facts that State and OU are good schools. I personally am under the impression that OU is a better institution (best meteorology school in the world, bar-none; tougher restrictions on entrance of students; wider bases of classes...) but that is just my point of view (and why I chose to be a Sooner and not a Cowboy.) dumb Yankee- As for the Buckeye (geez its hard not to switch that "b" to an "f") ... thanks for the good luck, I mean it, really, thanks. Oh yeah... and screw you. I never was for placing any team in Columbus, but darn, poop happens. As for your college "team", its hard not to go undefeated in your crap conference. Baylor would have problems not winning out, much less Texas, Nebraska, etc... At least they finally brought a team that means a damn to the Rose Bowl, but thats another story. As for not being for expansion, I keep waiting for someone to bring a good reason on not expanding in Oklahoma City. Until you can do that, shut the hell up, you dumb Yank. Prove me wrong, since all I am is a dumb, poor Okie, it shouldn't be too hard. Until then, expand in Oklahoma City.
This is what I don't get with most Sooner fans. They constantly talk down non-revenue sports, like wrestling, when that program is very well respected. Infact, the Sooner wrestling program has seven team nat'l. champs. Pretty impressive in my books. Besides, try telling your "sweaty men in underwear holding each other down" comment to the likes of Leonce Crump (current AA HWT.) and Steve Williams (probably one of the great HWT. wrestlers for the Sooners, if not the entire NCAA).
theSunshinePatriot- I can definately respect your opinion. I believe OSU is better because I'm in the Mechanical Engineering school here in Stillwater (very well respected Engineering college) and has been listed as one of the Best Buy colleges in the nation. We could argue for an infinate amount of time on which institution is better and still gain no ground. However, I agree both are great assets for the state. The men's rugby score you mention, that is crazy. It would be just comical if the previous year the score was 16-13. As for the OSU women's rugby team, all I can say is this--I was at a party earlier this semester when that a buddy of mine was throwing. They crashed the party and it just got wierd and a little scary. BTW--how do I get to Wantland Stadium? The last time I was there, I was nine and attending a HS football game when Edmond only had one HS.
