http://www.dailyherald.com/sports/sports_story.asp?intID=37742211 You seem to have hurt his feelings.
FWIW, I thought "idiot" was unnecesarily harsh. You can challenge and discuss someone's opinion without personal attacks. On the other hand, the guy seems to have a pretty thin skin. I still think the important thing is that the Daily Herald has a weekly soccer page to help keep the Fire in the public eye.
True enough, but if I were to speak for HalaMadrid on this one, which I won't, I would just quote his headline and say, Sorry, I just thought I was showing that I cared.
https://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=45755 Yes it was Liam. McDill did not really discuss why he was called an idoit. McDill somewhat critisized MLS for recognizing the players union but Liam pointed out that according to federal law MLS didn't have any option but to recognize the union.
With everything happening in the league, THIS is what he decides is most worth devoting his column space to talk about? Could have talked about Perez scoring his first career point on a goal of the week, or the outbursts of Carreri or Daniel Hernandez, or Grimandi going home, or grass going down in LA, or any number of other topics. He didn't even admit that he made an error in his whole presumption that MLS made a mistake in recognising the union (which they essentially had to), whish he could have easily done now. McDill's an even bigger idiot than I thought.
I agree, but this has been a long-running Kenny Stern-like string of idiocy, in my opinion. This sin't just the union article.
I honestly didn't know who McDill was up until now. I tend to only remember names of people who write things that make me go "hmm, this is a good writer". Obviously, this guy hasn't. But having read this latest whiny column I now do know who he is and I would have to agree, he is an idiot.
If you haven't found it already, Hala, this article is being discussed in MLS N&A under the title "Thin Skinned" (Guess why).
There's a difference between correcting someone and calling them an idiot. Just correct the person, encourage them to look further into the subject next time (which yes, he should have done), and let it be the end of it. J. Bradley's article this week was about how he made mistakes. And there's a mistake in that. We're human, we make mistakes. Let it go.
Well, I look at it this way...the Daily Herald is the third largest circulation in the Chicago area...it's not the type of paper who's going to hire someone away from The Guardian or Kicker to cover Fire soccer. They have a guy who is enthusiastic about the sport and are willing to give it the space that we think it deserves. So he's not an expert on US labor law. I'm willing to bet that most of the soccer writers in the US are not experts on it either. I agree with some of the other posts. Calling him an idiot is pointless. Sending him an e-mail or giving him a phone call with a polite beg-to-differ is probably the way to go.
Yeah, but calling someone an idiot is the lingua franca of online forums. For McDill to take exception to it is the very definition of thin-skinned. I keep meaning to say something on this in the "Impact of BigSoccer" thread on N&A. Paying too much attention to online fans is very, very dumb. They're a self-selected sample that's generally not representative of your audience at ALL. Which isn't to say online fans should be ignored, but there's a mountain of salt you need to take with the opinions expressed. And I've seen some "journalists" react to criticisms and neutral-toned corrections as if you've called them an idiot as well, so you never know. Later, COZ
Perhaps. But it's the first time to my knowledge that a member of the press ever led off a column with a reference to a negative comment from a fan chat site. That's weak. Very weak.
Shocking!! Doesn't Liam call everyone an idiot or a pedophile or call for them to be shot at one point in their lives. remeber Bob Bradley?? Oh yeah a whore!!! I feel sorry that McDilll needed to defend himself from that kid. Sigh!!!!
This is something that i've criticized Bradley for doing in the past. I absolutely agree with you. It comes off a as more of a weblog than a column. Maybe soccer is a little bit different because most of its hardcores are on the net, but its kind of lazy reporting.
More or less, yep. He does. That's why we like having him around. He didn't need to. The fact that he did, just solidified the fact that he is indeed an idiot.
