About the GOP? Duh, yes. Be fascinated enough to let that strawman live to tell the rest what you'll do to them. My comment was about myself and DT. We don't keep them. Y'all do. In any case, I'm skeptical of 20%, if that was intended to be a witty retort.
Maybe the US was different? e.g in the UK, football hooliganism was one obvious example of these kinds of crews I agree Clockwork Orange itself was highly stylised and the home invasion stuff was defintely not an occurrence in my city
I'll admit I often struggle to understand what point you're trying to make in your posts, so any glibness is more me just not really wanting to invest the time. But here, if I understood correctly, you said Dems have prioritized corporate interests over the "working man." I disagree with that. The fact that now a significant portion of the working men/women feel that way---per your " a lot of political scientists"---is different from what you initially said, and regardless I'd say that's more perception than it is a reality, especially if you factor in seeing Trump and his ilk as being in their corner---that's nuts. So the Dem failure in that regard is more in the lack of effective messaging, which I'd agree is a problem. And that doesn't mean I think Dem policies pertaining to working class people have always been effective, but having worked on the Hill, I never got the sense that making wealthy corporate interests even wealthier took priority. Even policies like Clinton signing on to the repeal of Glass-Steagall was at least partially rooted in thinking such policies would expand home ownership. Turned out it was wrong, IMO, but I don't think it was solely guided by thinking "ha ha, let's make investment bankers even richer."
you said “our families” I thought you were speaking for everyone. 20% is the number I saw, up 10% since 2020.
I think it depends on the location. The town I live in had a riot at a park near where I lived in the 70s. Lasted for three days. Granted, it's not a little boxes suburb that I live in but an older inner ring suburb of Detroit that's more city like. Even so, suburbs, whether they're inner ring or little boxes, don't exactly tolerate much.
The US never had football hooliganism or sports hooliganism. The closest might be Philadelphia Eagles fans, but even they don't come close to the English football firms of old.
Basically, if motorcycle gangs had affiliated with sports teams, we might have had similar problems. Well, also if we had, say, the Eagles and the Steelers playing in the same city instead of in different leagues on the other side of a state. But the idea of Hell's Angels following the Raiders and the Mongols following the 49ers, that might have caused some major problems. Alas, our young men who were into random aggro tended not to be sports fans. That's pretty much why we didn't have hooliganism, not our innate moral superiority which would be asserted whenever the news did a story about soccer violence in Europe or South America.
Quoting my own post here to say that if you want an example of how the cultural worldview (understanding of nature & society) influences values and morals, including political views, have a look at the most recent posts (#1431-1446) in the Trump supporters thread in the Elections forum.
https://www.forbes.com/sites/daveyw...e-users-hang-up-and-create-a-secret-word-now/ MAGA: "Why should we trust the FBI? They ILLEGALLY RAIDED Queen Melania's underwear drawer!!!"
I’ve lurked a little in that thread, but I don’t know how you have the tolerance to actually engage there. It’s a pretty brilliant idea for a thread though, tucking it away in the Elections forum where I don’t have to see it every day.
Only if you assume the blowhards posting there are representative of his voters overall. From my perspective anyone who identifies specifically as a “Trump supporter” is likely beyond hope, it’s the people who are less committed that are more worth the effort of understanding.
I think it's because in England there were "high culture" sports and "low culture" sports while in America all sports leagues were "mainstream" sports. Counterculture of any kind in the US a half-century ago meant not being involved with pro sports.
Having attended sports at all four leagues (NFL, NHL, NBA, MLB) I do have to say some do have a culture distinction. Or at least a dress code distinction. NHL, especially when I was growing up had a low culture kind of vibe to it. Same with NFL, especially with the Lions playing in the Silverdome. NBA's always had a bit of a high culture thing going, especially once David Stern made it his mission to make the NBA a cultural juggernaut. MLB's kind of in between but it's slowly changing to a more high culture kind of thing. Same with the NHL, but that's more down to the costs of things. Hockey ain't cheap. I have to say though, knowing people in the counterculture, especially in the 60s and 70s, I know plenty that were and still are avid sports fans. One's a massive Pistons fan.
That is kind of the wildest thing about all of this. Then on one hand believe he will not do the bad things he said but believe he will do the good things he said. It takes a certain level of cognitive dissonance. To listen to a man who lies so much and say no that's a lie but that's a truth. Simply because the other party saying that is telling you that he's not lying therefore you reject them and say no he's not going to do the bad things you said.
This is why so much of the current discussion is pointless. One they start slashing the federal government, raising the retirement age, cutting people's healthcare, arresting political opponents, the narrative will become concrete - especially if there is a recession.
Check this book out sometime. My favorite story from that book is about how rowdy "fans" would be at 19th century music recitals. It was common for supporters of one singer to show up at the rival singer's recital to heckle and to throw things -- rotten veggies, eggs, etc. In one city, it became common for fans (and this would happen at the opera if a singer was having an off night) to throw potatoes. A brilliant breakthrough when you think about. Unlike spoiled cabbage or tomatoes, these were more aerodynamically sound, and unlike eggs, they were easier to throw and most importantly, THEY WOULD LEAVE A MARK. Sports fans will not be surprised at all learn that this important 1880 fan intervention occurred first in Philadelphia. And it's also why Opera in America often featured high prices and restrictive dress codes that, at the time, were not common in Europe.
I saw something yesterday that Musk and Ramaswamy are recommending cutting out much of VA healthcare. That'll go over well with a lot of the faces....I mean Mango supporters.
Its just rehashed Reagan. They don't want to eliminate the services, they just want to provide it through well connected and more expensive contractors. Government contractors are good, government employees are bad. At least that's the theory. Remember folks, the government should be eliminated and end all handouts except for those to corporations.
I can't confirm for all but the African community and the balck ones I have been around were unified so we can talk politics. I would argue and still argue with my mom to understand the concept of sexual harassment. She comes from my older generation of course so she feels that some of these women bring it a ball Pawn themselves the way they scanly dressed and I'm trying to explain to her it's not the girls wearing nothing on TV it's the ones in the office but we have that discussion and I've had that discussion with my real aunts and my fake aunts.* For black people, it's a form of survival to keep tabs on what white people are doing or camp Now we have been slipping a bit with tik tok and disinformation plus black economic progress. I will let Sounders and those with family members in the gay coalition speak for their families and Latino families. *A fake aunt or uncle are those that a friend's of the family. It is possible your mom's best female friend is your Aunt as well as the wife of your dad's best friend. And your dad's best friend
You can talk all the crap you want online. Do that in person and you may get knocked out and these kids ain't ready for it. Witness the kid you said something out of bounds to former NFL lineman Jason Kelce and was shocked to see Kelce grab the kids phone and smash jt on the ground.
We investigated ourselves and found we broke none of our own laws. The financial sector was allowed to operate like airlines and cruise ships with their own world of rules and policies.
Well, I appreciate the response, at least, if not the tone which comes across as rather supercilious but there we are. Actually, in my last post, I didn't... I said 'the working class has felt ignored by the political liberal establishment and has thus abandoned them'. Whether they HAVE been abandoned is a separate issue but I'd suggest that the massive and rising inequality over several decades would suggest it's not an unreasonable impression for ordinary people to get. As I've repeatedly said, my thinking is NOT about people voting for Trump. It's about people NOT voting because they think there's no point. I agree with you, they're wrong but there we are. So the fact it released the shackles on the financial industry to drive even MORE wealth to them was just an unfortunate by-product? Also, of course, those industries just happened to be funding both parties (including the democrats), to push through that sort of policy... again, pure coincidence. Presumably this is the same way that Nafta was designed to make markets more competitive and drive down prices and it was pure coincidence that it also drove jobs to low wage areas abroad, making corporations more wealthy but losing those people their jobs. Or what about politicians, including Clinton's, effort to continue Nixon's war on drugs and make American safe that just happened to lead to the the huge increase in the prison population, benefitting the prison industrial complex. Yep, where could people have got that idea. It's a mystery and no mistake
I was talking about turnout specifically in relation to low income voters who, by the looks of it, don't think they have an interest in the result. The page I linked seems to confirm that, particularly if you look at the figures for turnout by income.
I think he's referring to Fortnite, Call of Duty, that kind of thing. A lot of young adults spend their lives there.
