Yeah, the quoted bit is from 'The Road to Wigan Pier'.

His publisher wanted the second part of the book to be removed or, at the very least, published separately—the first part details how the working class lived at that time.

What Orwell didn't seem to grasp is that the left had always succeeded only when the middle class and working class cooperated.

    He wasn't the only one.

Betjeman's poem 'Slough', (published at about the same time as Wigan Pier), also openly despised the middle class...

Their views on the English class system are not completely reliable, IMO, as they're infected with personal animosities which aren't helpful.

Yes, I've read it and, if you recall, I mentioned a part in it where he and another guy, (a 'white' Russian), are tormenting an elderly woman who also worked in the hotel and he observed that's how people act when they're poor and hungry... they torment others in the same situation.

He didn't seem to realise that's how some people act when they're poor and hungry. It's mainly just white russians, (a 'friend' of his who was also a MASSIVE antisemite, IIRC), and upper class English bellends, down on their luck and indulging themselves in a little 'poverty safari' for entertainment.

I like Orwell's books but I've never indulged the idea he was that nice a guy with sound ideas about class and inequality, let alone how people act when they're under pressure.

I don’t have an NYT subscription, but I’ve seen excerpts.

This would have been an administration-rocking scandal in 99% of the weeks since WW II. By that I mean, if Bush’s COS had this published on 9/9/2001, it would have been forgotten. Or if it had been published during any other big news week

She basically made it pretty easy for the lawyers for Comey, James, etc. to prove selective prosecution.

And given that she’s part of this administration I have no idea if she’s just too stupid to know that or she knew that and did it in an act of defiance. And that’s just a minor part of the excerpts that prompted my post.

Either way…she is likely to get her face eaten.

The London fire improved things quite a bit, didn't it? How about the Blitz?

Or Germany or Japan after the war?

She is a well regarded campaign veteran including running Trump's 2024 campaign.

The idea she doesn't know the rules of engagement with journos doesn't hold up. She knew this would all get out. Why she did it I have no idea.

Remember Wiles has had basically zero profile all year despite being COS.

    That’s the joke.

I just heard Tim Miller talk about her briefly on today’s podcast with Will Sommer. She and Tim worked together on John Huntsman’s campaign, and he offhandedly mentioned she kind had a bit of a mental break when the party broke for Trump. He didn’t follow up with much more.

yeah…I just read part one of the vanity fair article. She sounds vile disgusting and smart. And the “Trump has an alcoholic personality” comment was taken out of contect…though I’m not quite sure trump is smart enough to understand the context and that she was actually complimenting him. If she can successfully explain it to the toddler in chief she might escape the leopards

Latinos for Trump never thought he'd deport the peaceful immigrants who lacked documents.

I joked earlier in the year about Cubans having a study abroad/cultural exchange program the US govt would implement. Somewhere in the U.S. where the gas station doubles as the grocery store and the local diner.

Even if we extended it all Latinos, we would get a muppet like this complaining what everyone saw coming.

They only thought he'd deport those who did something worthy of arrest...not those who go to work, get paid under the table and never have done so much as run a red light.

He's deporting everyone without papers. In his mind, the peaceful ones are also criminals because they're here illegal. (But also, the Jan 6th idiots crossed borders without permission but they're peaceful protesters in his mind. Meanwhile, MAGA is saying "Oh, so it's illegal to cross borders without permission, eh?")

But anyhoo, yeah, the Latinos for Trump got fooled, hence why this thread exists.
