That's great news. I wonder if they're working on trying to help keep the Euro soccer thieves away from Freddy too. It kinda hints at that.

I say give him a 2 Million bonus if he signs with the Galaxy next year. 1.5 for another MLS team.

    Midwest, the real one.
Is Nike a big Olympics sponsor? I can think of McDonald's, Coca-Cola, Campbell's....I don't specifically remember Nike, but things could change if they see a money-maker.

I actually heard a news commentator state LeBron was making an error passing up his college education.
Egads.. For one thing, you can go back to school when your older or go part time and soon he'll be able to buy a small college if he wants.

They haven't been an official sponsor in the past but I don't know about Athens.
They have, however, been a major and perhaps the major player at the games.
This is a bit from a piece that touches on that:

"Most notoriously, athletic clothing marketer Nike practically hijacked the 1996 Atlanta summer games from official sponsor Reebok by plastering the city with outdoor billboards and a huge Niketown tent on the event site.
The so-called “ambush marketing” tactics resulted in a new rule being added to the Olympics charter that prohibits corporate rivals of official sponsors from advertising during the games.
“All sponsors are trying to deal with the issue of whether some of the luster is off the Olympics,” said sports marketing consultant Burton. “The costs are so high and it may not have the same reach.”

Given that our U23s just kicked Mexico's butt - but our U17s with Adu didn't, I'm not sure I'd like to have Adu on our Olympic team. Maybe he can sit on the bench and learn what it means to play as a team.

You can forget about Adu, he surely will go and play in Europe (Thieves??Give me a break!) or another place than in USA. This young African boy should develope better all his skills in real football competitions.

Maybe he's thinking the game on another level from his teammates?

He'll sign with ManU this summer I suspect. I mean ManU and Nike are the ones getting Nike posterboy Ronaldinho into Old Trafford this summer from PSG, and now that it's become public that ManU and Sir Alex Fergmoanason like Adu, plus they're coming to the states for their tour, and now he's a Nike guy, it just all seems to be coming together.

As I have said 20-30 times on these boards, if Freddy's mom wants him near home as much as possible after graduation, she will move the family to the LA area because all the national teams are moving their training here. In other words, if he plays for LA he will be close to home while training with both teams. No other MLS city can do that. [IMG]

"Adu would become ineligible for NCAA (news - web sites) soccer with this deal, but he does not plan to play in college. "

Hey, I'm not very familiar with this section of Big Soccer; could someone please link me to the "Seriously, how old is Freddy Adu" thread?
    -Thanks.

Would this be considered some of the infamous Nike child labor?

...except he wouldn't be allowed to play, or even sign a professional contract for ManU until he's 18. The bidding war will be between MLS and Charleston Battery.

This is a typical old school type, no pun intended. They are still mired in "go to college, get your degree, get a good job." This can be sound advice for working stiffs, but some professional athletes make enough in a week to pay for college. Times are changing, some don't keep up.
