Sadio Mané had long since assumed his place in Liverpool history. He was a scorer in one Champions League final, a winner in another, a catalyst in ending their 30-year wait for a league title, but now he has further evidence of his individual excellence. He joined a distinguished band by becoming the 18th man to register a century of goals for Liverpool. He now finds himself level with Kevin Keegan with John Barnes next in his sights.
💯 @PremierLeague goals for super Sadio! ❤️ pic.twitter.com/zxWBkoXF46— Liverpool FC (@LFC) October 16, 2021
Sadio Mane is simply a wonderful human being, he has done, and is doing, wonderful things for impoverished people in Senegal. “Why would I want ten Ferraris, 20 diamond watches, or two planes? What will these objects do for me and for the world?” Mane said in 2019 https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/spo.../sadio-manes-incredible-journey-torn-23010233
Sadio Mane: "It's the most beautiful day of my life. Of all the cups I've won, this one is my favorite. It's like a dream. As a child, I cried when the national team lost a football match." pic.twitter.com/NNSdM7yp1G— DaveOCKOP (@DaveOCKOP) February 7, 2022 Strong words considering he's won the Prem along with being European and world champions with Liverpool.
but very understandable. African countries basically realize they have very very little chance of winning the WC, so for many of them AFCON is the ultimate. (I don't see his comments as problematic.)
The man obviously loves his country, and his home town...based on what I've heard he's done for them... Sounds like a solid dude!
Its a bit of a shifting perspective, I suppose. I mean, would Marco Van Basten rather have scored that goal from the Euro 1988 final against Steaua Bucharest to win the European Cup the year before or against the USSR when he did?
Also, he probably feels a lot more pressure to perform for Senegal as the "main man". At Liverpool, there are always others to pick up the slack if he is having an indifferent day.
Eh, that's a bit of an apples and oranges comparison. While I won't discount European Championships pre Champions League (harder to get in), I think it's a much bigger achievement to win one in the Champions League era vs the old European Cup. EDIT: That might've been the point you were trying to make. I don't know, I have a headache.
he also doesn't have to play in that role week-in, week-out. Maybe makes it easier to operate at 100%
Not sure if this has been posted, but it's a good read. https://www.cbssports.com/soccer/ne...ng-afcon-means-explains-mo-salahs-mind-games/
Sadio Mane surpasses Steven Gerrard’s record of 21 Champions League goals for Liverpool. That's now 22 for the Senegalese forward.
14 - Sadio Mané has tonight netted his 14th goal in the UEFA Champions League knockout stages, equalling Didier Drobga’s record as the African with the most such goals in the competition’s history. Pride. pic.twitter.com/fwVTLoxqbf— OptaJoe (@OptaJoe) April 27, 2022
Two big milestones for Sadio Mane tonight. His 15th Champions League goal means he has surpassed Didier Drogba (14) as the leading African goalscorer in the knockout phase of the competition. Also, most Champions League knockout phase goals for an English club: 15 - Sadio Mané (all Liverpool) 15 - Frank Lampard (all Chelsea) 14 - Wayne Rooney (all Manchester United)
